Morocco were clinical before Scotland had touched the ball. That set the tone for everything that followed.
A 1–0 victory at the Boston Stadium on Friday night sends the Atlas Lions towards the top of Group C, with Ismael Saibari’s 70-second opener — the fastest goal in FIFA World Cup 2026™ so far — proving to be the only difference between the two sides. Scotland pressed hard in the final 30 minutes but could find no way past Yassine Bounou, whose clean sheet sealed it.

The Opening Strike
Brahim Díaz was the architect. Sharp and inventive from the first whistle, he threaded a perfectly timed through ball into the penalty area. Saibari met it without hesitation and smashed it into the top corner. Goal.
It was the kind of start Morocco had planned for. Scotland, still finding their footing, had no time to adjust. The Tartan Army — vocal, expectant — found themselves a goal down before they’d even settled into their seats. Morocco, exactly where they wanted to be, pressed for more.
Morocco Press for More
The Atlas Lions did not ease up. In the 10th minute, capitalising on early disorganisation in Scotland’s defensive shape, Morocco surged into the attacking third with rapid, overlapping runs. A dangerous ball was zipped across the face of the six-yard box, cutting past the Scottish centre-backs. Saibari read the flight perfectly and found himself point-blank in front of goal — but under pressure from a closing defender, he couldn’t get a clean connection.
The chances kept coming. In the 19th minute, Díaz produced another defence-splitting pass, this time down the flank. Achraf Hakimi, explosive and relentless in his overlapping run, beat Grant Hanley to the ball and received a low delivery right on the edge of the six-yard box. It should have been a second goal. But Angus Gunn sprinted off his line with excellent anticipation and threw his body in front of the ball to make a crucial reflex block. Outstanding goalkeeping. Gunn gave Scotland something to build on.
Still Morocco came. Saibari rattled a deflected effort off the crossbar. The Atlas Lions had done everything but put the game to bed — a fact that would define the final 30 minutes.
Scotland’s Late Surge
Scotland emerged from the interval with more urgency and clearer intent. The Tartan Army, sensing the game was still alive, transitioned into a superior attacking engine, and for a sustained final spell Morocco were under genuine pressure for the first time all night.
Ryan Christie had the equaliser at his feet. He skied it. That miss will linger longest in a Scottish dressing room otherwise full of effort. Scott McTominay was combative throughout — throwing himself into challenges, driving forward, and appealing loudly for a penalty in the box. The referee dismissed every claim.
None of it was enough to unlock Bounou. Morocco’s goalkeeper was calm and commanding under pressure, dealing with Scotland’s late waves of attack with a composure that matched his performance all night. Clean sheet intact. Mission accomplished.

Group C After Matchday 2
Morocco’s victory keeps them firmly in contention in Group C. Their Matchday 3 fixture is against Haiti at the Atlanta Stadium on June 25 (3:30 AM IST) — win that, and the Atlas Lions march into the knockouts with real momentum.
Scotland’s path is harder. They face Brazil in their final group game in Miami on June 25 (3:30 AM IST) — and, depending on other results, nothing less than a win may be enough to extend their World Cup journey. The Tartan Army has been in difficult situations before. Whether they can find a way through Brazil and onto the knockout stage remains the question everyone in Glasgow will be asking.
