Half-Time Report | Canada 0–0 Morocco | Canada completely neutralises Morocco’s midfield.

Canada vs Morocco:
FIFA World Cup 2026

Canada and Morocco are level at 0–0 at half-time in their FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 16 match at the Houston Stadium. The scoreline tells you nothing. Canada dominated the first 25 minutes with an intensity that Morocco simply could not match — four corners, three shots, two of them on target, and a Yassine Bounou performance that kept the Atlas Lions alive. Then Ismael Saibari went off injured in the 21st minute. Morocco gradually found their footing. It is 0–0, but the match has already had plenty to talk about.

Canada’s High Press — and Bounou’s First Test

Jesse Marsch set Canada up to press relentlessly from the first whistle. They won a corner inside the opening minute. Richie Laryea drove down the left, won the ball back high up the pitch, and the Canadians were immediately camped in Moroccan territory. A flick-on from the corner found Jonathan David in the penalty area — his tight-angle effort was parried away by Bounou. Canada was flying.

The best chance of the half arrived in the 10th minute. Ali Ahmed intercepted a pass in midfield and found Tani Oluwaseyi in space. Oluwaseyi controlled beautifully, turned his defender, and drove a powerful strike toward goal. Bounou’s save was reflexive and outstanding — the kind that changes the complexion of a match. Canada had their clearest opening and Morocco’s goalkeeper had denied it.

Saibari Off — Morocco’s Biggest Blow

The 21st minute changed Morocco’s night. Ismael Saibari — their top scorer in this World Cup, the player Canada had spent considerable preparation time planning against — pulled up with a hamstring injury and could not continue. Soufiane Rahimi came on in his place. For Morocco, losing their most dangerous attacker in the 21st minute of a Round of 16 match is a significant problem. Canada’s defensive preparation had accounted for Saibari. Now they face a different question.

By the first hydration break, the stats were one-sided: four corners and three shots for Canada, zero entries into the Canadian penalty area for Morocco.

Morocco Steady Themselves

Then Morocco began to find their structure. The Rahimi substitution gave them a different kind of threat — directness, cut-inside movement. In the 28th minute, Rahimi did exactly that: cut in from the left and drove a low shot toward goal. Max Crépeau made his first meaningful save of the half. Morocco had arrived in the Canadian half.

The final quarter of the first half settled into a physical midfield battle. Morocco neutralised Canada’s momentum through discipline and pressing of their own. Alistair Johnston met a Stephen Eustáquio corner, but his header lacked the power to trouble Bounou. Canada still on top overall — just unable to convert it into a goal.

What the Second Half Holds

Canada need to convert their pressure. In this Round of 16, the team that creates and doesn’t score is always one mistake away from elimination. Morocco need Rahimi to make a genuine impact in Saibari’s absence — and they need to find more of the ball in the attacking third.

Bounou has been the best player on the pitch. Jonathan David — still searching for his first goal of the match — will want another chance. Forty-five minutes remain. Everything is still to play for.
