Team analysis

Spain

De La Fuente’s squad is built on the same foundations that won Euro 2024 — Rodri as the engine, Pedri as the creative brain, Nico Williams offering direct running — but nothing worked against Cape Verde. Twenty-seven shots. Seven on target. Zero goals. Spain circulated the ball for 90 minutes without finding the pass that unlocks a deep-sitting block. Lamine Yamal came on for the last 20 minutes and immediately lifted the energy. De La Fuente plans to give him 30 or more minutes here.

Key player: Rodri — The Manchester City midfielder captains Spain and anchors everything De La Fuente builds. Against Cape Verde, he logged 136 touches — the most of any player. Touches don’t score goals. Against a deep Saudi block, he needs passes that move defenders rather than maintain possession. He’s probably the best midfielder at this tournament. Saturday is when he proves it.

Saudi Arabia

Georgios Donis only took charge in April — barely eight weeks before kick-off. Saudi Arabia then led Uruguay for most of their opener — no small feat under a new manager. Al-Amri broke the deadlock after Kanno’s header was parried into his path, and for long spells it looked like three points. Araujo levelled with 10 minutes left. What Saudi Arabia showed was a coherent defensive structure: compact in a 4–5–1, willing to sit deep and transition sharply. Kanno and Al-Khaibari protect the back line, while Salem Al-Dawsari provides the outlet on the left. He was well-contained by Uruguay but will want more space in Atlanta.

Key player: Salem Al-Dawsari — At 32, the Al Hilal captain is still Saudi Arabia’s most dangerous player. He scored the winner against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup — a moment Saudi Arabia still celebrates — and his ability to carry at pace and finish under pressure makes him a constant threat. If Spain’s fullbacks give him space, they’ll know about it fast.

Head-to-head record

Spain have won all three previous meetings. The only competitive fixture between them came at the 2006 World Cup — a 1–0 win for Spain. Two friendlies since, in 2010 and 2012, also went La Roja’s way, the latter a 5–0. Saturday is only their second competitive meeting. Saudi Arabia have never beaten Spain.

Tactical preview

De La Fuente will stretch Saudi Arabia’s block with Nico Williams on the right and Pedri drifting infield. The key decision is when Yamal enters — if Spain are level or behind at the hour mark, the teenager’s arrival changes Saudi Arabia’s defensive calculation entirely. Donis will set a deep mid-block, use Al-Dawsari on transitions, and try to replicate what Cape Verde managed. Set pieces give Saudi Arabia an additional route.

Key storylines

  • Spain’s finishing problem — Twenty-seven shots and no goals is a warning. Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais, 34, was sensational against Uruguay — saves that kept them in it long after they should have conceded. If Spain produce another night of high volume and low quality, Al-Owais will take the point. Spain need early goals. A slow start hands Saudi Arabia the match they want.
  • Al-Owais against La Roja — Saudi Arabia’s first choice for a decade. Against Uruguay, his saves and composure under pressure helped them secure 1 point. Spain’s attack is stronger and will test him in different ways. If Al-Owais produces something similar, it’s one of the stories of Group H.
  • Yamal’s managed return — De La Fuente plans 30 or more minutes for the Barcelona teenager here. If Spain are level when Yamal comes on, Saudi Arabia will need a plan for the player who changed the game the moment he appeared against Cape Verde. They may not have one.

Prediction and verdict

Saudi Arabia are organised and won’t fold easily — their draw with Uruguay proved that. But Spain’s quality across the squad is at a different level. The European champions can’t afford another goalless night. They won’t have one.
