FIFA World Cup 2026

Group Stage | Group C | Boston Stadium | Friday, 20 June — 3:30 AM (IST)

Match overview

Scotland sit top of Group C after beating Haiti 1-0 — their first World Cup win in 28 years. Morocco are second, frustrated by Alisson’s stoppage-time double save that denied them a famous win over Brazil. Victory here sends Scotland through to the Round of 32 for the first time in their history. Morocco need the points to stay in control of their own qualification. Group C is alive.

Team analysis

Scotland

Steve Clarke’s side ended 28 years of World Cup hurt, then backed it up immediately with a composed 1-0 win over Haiti. McGinn’s deflected effort in the 28th minute was the difference, and Scotland’s defensive organisation kept it that way. The engine is Scott McTominay, who scored nine Serie A goals from midfield at Napoli last season and is the player around whom Clarke’s system is built. Andy Robertson at Liverpool gives them world-class quality on one flank. Organised, hard to beat, and the form side in Group C.

Key player: Scott McTominay (Napoli) — Nine Serie A goals from midfield last season tells you what McTominay brings. He drives forward, wins second balls, and arrives late with genuine menace. He carried Scotland through qualifying and was the difference in big moments. Morocco will know his runs from deep. If Scotland are to make history by winning back-to-back games at a major tournament, McTominay has to be at the heart of it.

Morocco

Their performance against Brazil was the best opening-round display in Group C. Under Mohamed Ouahbi — who led Morocco’s Under-20 side to World Cup glory last year — the Atlas Lions have moved away from the defensive counter-attacking style of Qatar 2022 toward something more technical. Eighteen-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi (Lille) controlled the midfield against Brazil, completing 60 of 66 passes. Brahim Díaz (Real Madrid) provided the assist for Saibari’s opener. Hakimi captains the side fresh off winning the Champions League with PSG.

Key player: Achraf Hakimi (PSG) — The PSG right-back just won the Champions League and is one of the best attacking full-backs in the world. His overlapping runs, crossing ability, and drive through half-spaces are a constant threat down the right. Scotland’s left side will face a decision every time Hakimi picks up the ball.

Head-to-head record

These two sides have met once competitively, at the 1998 World Cup in France. Morocco won 3-0 in the group stage — Salaheddine Bassir scored twice, once from long range and once from the spot, before Craig Burley was sent off early in the second half to complete a miserable afternoon. Scotland have never beaten Morocco. History does not flatter Steve Clarke’s side, though the current squad carries no connection to 1998.

Tactical preview

Clarke will look to be compact, McTominay and McGinn working to disrupt Morocco’s passing rhythm in the centre, Robertson pushing forward on the left. Morocco under Ouahbi want to play — Bouaddi and Díaz linking through the thirds, Hakimi running the right channel, Saibari in behind. If Scotland stay compact and hit Morocco on the counter, it could be tight. If Morocco find their rhythm early, Scotland’s night gets very long very quickly.

Key storylines

  • Scotland’s historic chance — a win here puts them through to the Round of 32 and makes them the first Scottish side ever to win consecutive games at a major tournament. Twenty-eight years to qualify. One more win to write something new.
  • Ayyoub Bouaddi — 18 years old, Lille midfielder, completed 91% of his passes in his World Cup debut against Brazil and was the standout player on the pitch. Scotland’s midfield needs a plan for him.
  • Morocco’s Matchday 1 frustration — they were the better side against Brazil and Alisson’s double save in the 99th minute denied them what looked like a deserved win. That edge carries over. A team that believes it should already have six points is a dangerous thing to face on Matchday 2.

Prediction and verdict

Morocco were the better side in Group C on Matchday 1 and carry genuine quality across the pitch. Scotland will make this hard — Clarke’s teams always do — and McTominay will run until his legs give out. But Hakimi, Díaz, and Bouaddi are a step above what Haiti could offer, and Morocco’s frustration from the Brazil draw sharpens their edge here. Morocco should win this with a margin of more than 2 goals.
