Four matches. Four stories. South Africa snatched a late equaliser in Atlanta to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Switzerland dismantled Bosnia and Herzegovina with clinical ruthlessness. Canada put six past Qatar in the tournament’s most emphatic result yet. And Mexico became the first team at FIFA World Cup 2026™ to book their place in the Round of 32. A relentless day of football — here is everything that happened.

South Africa 1–1 Czechia | Group A

For 82 minutes it looked like Czechia would collect a crucial three points. Tomáš Sadílek had given them the lead inside six minutes with a composed finish, and South Africa — despite pressing and probing — could not find a way through a well-organised Czech defence. Then came the penalty.

South Africa were awarded a spot-kick in the 83rd minute, and Teboho Mokoena stepped up to convert. The equaliser sparked scenes of relief and jubilation in Atlanta. A point keeps South Africa’s qualification hopes alive — slim as they now are — heading into Matchday 3 against South Korea.

Both sides finish the matchday on one point. Czechia face Mexico — already through — in their final group game (June 25, 6:30 AM IST, Estadio Azteca). South Africa face South Korea at the same time at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. Both matches kick off simultaneously, so the drama will run to the final whistle.

Switzerland 4–1 Bosnia and Herzegovina | Group B

Switzerland were patient when they needed to be and devastating when the opportunity came. Moise Manzambi announced himself on the biggest stage with a brace, Rubén Vargas added a third in the 84th minute, and Granit Xhaka converted a penalty to complete a commanding 4–1 win at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The match shifted in the 80th minute when Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Emir Muharemović was shown a red card for a foul on Manzambi — who had already put Switzerland ahead moments earlier. Down to ten men, Bosnia had no realistic answer. Switzerland were clinical in exploiting the numerical advantage.

Switzerland had drawn their opening game against Qatar. This was an entirely different performance — direct, aggressive, and relentless. With four points, they now face Canada in the Group B decider on June 25 (12:30 AM IST) at BC Place, Vancouver. Whoever wins tops the group.

Canada 6–0 Qatar | Group B

Canada served up the performance of the tournament so far — a 6–0 demolition of Qatar at BC Place, Vancouver, built around a stunning hat-trick from Jonathan David. It is the largest winning margin at FIFA World Cup 2026™, and the most commanding individual display the tournament has yet produced.

Qatar were reduced to nine men as the match spiralled beyond their control. Canada were ruthless in front of goal, converting chance after chance as the floodgates opened in the second half. David’s three goals cemented his position as one of the tournament’s standout performers through just two matchdays.

One concern for Canada: midfielder Ismaël Koné was forced off with an injury, and his involvement in the rest of the tournament is uncertain. Canada sit on four points and face Switzerland in the Group B finale — a match that will decide who tops the group and who faces the tougher route into the knockout rounds.

Mexico 1–0 South Korea | Group A

Mexico are through. A professional 1–0 win over South Korea at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara sealed back-to-back victories for El Tri and confirmed them as the first team at FIFA World Cup 2026™ to advance to the Round of 32 — six points from six, with a game to spare.

The only goal arrived in the 50th minute when goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilt a cross directly into the path of Luis Romo, who swept home from close range. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel then produced a spectacular double save in the 87th minute to deny Cho Gue-sung and preserve a second successive clean sheet.

Son Heung-min was withdrawn at the 56-minute mark in what appeared to be a tactical decision — resting the veteran captain ahead of South Korea’s crucial Matchday 3 encounter against South Africa on June 25 (6:30 AM IST, Estadio BBVA, Monterrey). South Korea remain on three points and face a nervous wait.
