Group Stage | Group B
Los Angeles Stadium | Friday, 19 June — 12:30 AM (IST)
Match overview
Group B is still completely open, all four sides level on one point. Switzerland had Breel Embolo’s penalty in hand against Qatar until Boualem Khoukhi’s 94th-minute header wiped it out. Bosnia and Herzegovina went in front against Canada through Jovo Lukić, only for Cyle Larin to equalise off the bench. Both teams will feel they left points on the table in round one. Whoever wins here takes a significant step toward the knockout stage in a group that offers no easy games.

Team analysis
Switzerland
Murat Yakin’s side topped their UEFA qualifying group without losing, conceding just two goals in six matches. They’ve reached the knockout stage at each of their last six major tournaments and carry a quiet confidence that catches opponents off guard. Granit Xhaka — now at Sunderland after winning the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen — leads the midfield for a fourth consecutive World Cup. Manuel Akanji at Inter Milan anchors the defence. They know exactly how to handle must-win group games.
Key player: Breel Embolo — The Rennes striker overcame years of injury setbacks to establish himself as Switzerland’s primary goal threat. He scored twice at the 2022 World Cup and has carried that form into 2026. His movement in behind, physicality in the box, and composure from the spot — shown against Qatar — make him the player Bosnia and Herzegovina’s defence will track from first to last.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sergej Barbarez’s side qualified through one of the harder playoff routes — beating Wales then Italy on penalties — and are here on genuine merit. Edin Džeko leads them at 40, still scoring for Schalke and still the focal point after 73 international goals. Their concern is Sead Kolašinac, the Atalanta left-back who limped off against Canada and is a doubt here. Losing their defensive captain would be a serious blow to Barbarez’s plans.
Key player: Edin Džeko — Bosnia and Herzegovina’s all-time top scorer at 73 goals, almost certainly playing his final World Cup at 40. He was there in Brazil in 2014 and has carried this team’s attacking ambitions through spells at Manchester City, Roma, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahçe. His hold-up play and experience in big matches remain invaluable. If Bosnia and Herzegovina are to threaten Switzerland, it starts through Džeko.
Head-to-head record
Their only meeting as independent nations came in a March 2016 friendly in Zurich, where Bosnia and Herzegovina won 2-0 — Džeko opening the scoring and Miralem Pjanić adding a second. Switzerland were beaten on home soil and will carry that result as motivation. Including historical Yugoslavia fixtures, the record leans toward Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is their first competitive meeting, which gives it extra edge.
Tactical preview
Yakin will control possession through Xhaka and Remo Freuler in a double pivot, with Embolo running in behind Bosnia and Herzegovina’s backline. Switzerland’s defensive record in qualifying was exceptional. Bosnia and Herzegovina will absorb pressure and use Džeko as an outlet, with runners working off him in transition. Set pieces are a genuine weapon — Lukić proved that against Canada — and Switzerland must be disciplined from dead balls.
Key storylines
- Edin Džeko playing in a FIFA World Cup 2026™ at 40 is one of the tournament’s great personal stories. He scored in the 2014 group stage against Nigeria and is back twelve years later with 73 international goals. Almost certainly his last major tournament. Every time he touches the ball in Los Angeles Stadium, there is the weight of a nation behind it.
- Switzerland’s record at major tournaments is consistently undervalued. They beat France in the UEFA Euro 2024 Round of 16 — one of that tournament’s great upsets — and have reached the knockout stage at each of the last six competitions. Yakin has built a side that is hard to break down and dangerous on the counter. Bosnia and Herzegovina will need to be well-organised to avoid being on the wrong end of that this time.
- Bosnia and Herzegovina’s qualification story adds context here. Beating Wales was expected; beating Italy on penalties was not. It announced a squad with genuine belief under Barbarez — Kerim Alajbegović and Esmir Bajraktarević among the young talents alongside Džeko. They qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ the hard way, and now need to show they can compete at this level.
Prediction and verdict
Switzerland’s organisation, squad depth, and Embolo’s goal threat make them favourites. Bosnia and Herzegovina have spirit and Džeko’s experience, but the potential absence of Kolašinac leaves them short defensively against a side that knows exactly how to manage these games. Switzerland is expected to win this.
