From its sombre storytelling technique to a list of relatable characters, Mathil stands out from other political satires by being simple and realistic.

The much-awaited Tamil film Mathil is finally here and it is everything we expected it to be. Starring veteran director KS Ravikumar in the lead, Mathil directed by Mithran R Jawahar, is a political satire like no other. Although we have come across a number of political satires and dramas, this ZEE5 original film simply stands out as one of a kind. From its storytelling technique to a list of relatable characters, Mathil is a story that will connect to each one of us on a personal level. Mithran, who is known for making heart-touching dramas like Yaaradi Nee Mohini, Uthamaputhiran, and Kutty, has done it once again by delivering a hard-hitting socially relevant gem.

Set to be a cornerstone of KS Ravikumar’s acting career, the movie revolves around his character named Lakshmikanthan. A common man to whom his family means all is sure to make you relate to him. He has been through a lot in his life and knows the value of things he has earned. For this very reason, he values the house he built and keeps a sentimental attachment to it. The movie’s relatability starts right here when we see him complain about the slightest things at home, reminding us all a common middle-class family we have all seen.

The story escalates as his house’s boundary wall is vandalized by some political workers. Based on how much he struggled to build it in the first place, Lakshmikanthan decides to fight this and goes on to file a complaint against the action and this is where things begin to fall apart. The world in which the story of Mathil is happening is an accurate depiction of our society. From the sentimental reach point of the house owner to the lazy police officer who tries to dismiss the case without addressing it, we strongly relate to the situation.

The movie is set as a comedy-drama with satirical elements and is rich with social commentary about the present-day politics in the country. The politician’s ego is bigger than a poor man’s will and is portrayed accurately throughout the story. Unlike other political dramas, Mathil is slow-moving and has almost no big surprises. The story is as real as it gets and stays away from superficial acts like a hero who uses physical strength to fight or challenges the system alone. Mathil shows how vulnerable a middle-class man really is, and instead of glorifying his actions, we even see him beg for help at one point.

Just like in our society, Mathil also has its bunch of good people and along with the corrupt ones. Even though the movie has some refreshing points in between to calm down or spare a laugh, the movie sticks to its point showcasing how such a situation strikes in reality. The movie keeps away from larger than life situations. There are no big action sequences or dance numbers, instead, it has some heart-touching moments where we realise that Mathil could be a story about any one of us.

Unlike the few recent political dramas, the heroes win is not that glorious nor does he become a politician and change the world. Lakshmikanthan stays stuck to his ground and continues to lead a normal life like he did before the events took place. The movie communicates the power of a common man in the digital age. The story is strongly rooted in the words, “EN SUVAR, EN URIMAI” which translates to “My wall is my Right”, showcasing the legitimate thoughts of a middle-class family man.
