Away from larger than life scenarios or fights, Mathil sticks to the problem any one of us could face. The tale of a common man’s fight against the powerful is the motivation for each one of us need.

We have found it hard to draw similarities between our lives and the heroes in our favourite movies for the longest time. Rarely do we find a moment where we share the same aspirations and emotions as the lead character and it simply connects. This very point is exactly why the latest ZEE5 original Tamil movie Mathil, stands out from others. Mathil is a common man’s tale and the emotions are as real as it gets. Talking about some basic yet important matters of the society, it is indeed a helping hand in shortening the divide between the common man and the powerful.

Directed by Mithran Jawahar, Mathil starring K.S. Ravikumar and Mime Gopi revolves around Lakshmikanthan, a common man and his fight for justice. After being thrown into a fight reluctantly by Mime Gopi’s character, a potential MLA Senapati who has his way with anything he wants, he decides to fight his way out. The movie that falls under the genre of political drama simply stands out with its premise. This is not the first time we have heard stories of a common man fighting the powerful, but Mathil stands out by a mile with its relatability and true to the ground emotions.

Unlike other political dramas, Mathil is not larger than life nor does it have a grand ending. Mathil simply takes us through a few unfortunate incidents that lead to a common man being dragged into a fight against a powerful person, which in any other scenario would not have happened. And instead of a grand ending, the movie simply signs off with a lighthearted message that one’s right is to be protected and it really doesn’t matter who opposes it. This is the exact reason that makes Mathil a socially relevant movie in all senses.

The fight between Lakshmikanthan and the powerful politician starts with an issue risen from painting a wall. This is something we all see daily, yet ignore. But, Lakshmikanthan reminds us all that protecting our walls is our right and decides to fight against this. The situation escalates and goes out of the common man’s hand. Unlike many of us who would have given up thinking that such a big fight was impossible to take up, Lakshmikanthan stands up and goes forth with it. His actions simply prove that the divide between the rich and the poor is there because we let it happen and not because it has to be.

In this digital age, picking a fight bigger than your calibre is possible and the movie portrays the same. Lakshmikanthan takes help from people around him and channelizes all their displeasure in powerful men misusing their abilities to continue the fight. We have seen the same happen in movies like Vijay’s Mersal where the common man takes on the powerful and the society around them simply steps in to help. Mathil shows the same scenario but more simply and realistically.

While Mathil ends on a positive note, we know that most fights of such resorts don’t end well in our society. However, the message at the end where Lakshmikanthan asks us all to stand up for our rights is all we must take away from the movie. Mathil is a reminder that times have changed and living in fear of the powerful is not an option anymore. One can choose to fight and the movie’s story can be the motivating factor helping us to bridge the divide between the common man and the powerful.
