For 73 minutes, Bosnia and Herzegovina held firm. Compact, disciplined, and difficult to break down — Sergej Barbarez’s side had the look of a team that could nick a point and leave Los Angeles with something to show for their efforts. Then Johan Manzambi came off the bench. And everything changed. Switzerland turned a goalless first half into a 4-1 demolition, and Group B suddenly has a very clear leader.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Defiant First Half

Switzerland came into this fixture with a point from their opening Group B draw, and the expectation was that they would quickly take control. Bosnia and Herzegovina had other ideas. Their defensive shape was compact and well-organised, closing down space in central areas and forcing Switzerland to work wide without finding a way through.

Breel Embolo caused moments of anxiety for the Bosnian backline, but the goalkeeper and defensive unit held together when it mattered. The first half ended 0-0. Bosnia and Herzegovina had done exactly what they needed to do — frustrate a technically superior side and keep their tournament alive.

Manzambi: The Substitute Who Unlocked Everything

Johan Manzambi arrived off the bench with the match still goalless and — within minutes — changed its entire shape. In the 74th minute, he met the ball first-time and struck a superb volley that gave the goalkeeper no chance. It was the kind of goal that makes a stadium inhale sharply before erupting: perfectly weighted, perfectly struck.

Bosnia and Herzegovina now had to come forward, and the space they left behind proved fatal. In the 80th minute, Tarik Muharemovic pulled down Breel Embolo as the Swiss forward ran in behind — a clear foul, a clear red card. Bosnia and Herzegovina were reduced to ten men with ten minutes still to play, and Switzerland had room to run.

The Goals Keep Coming

Ruben Vargas made it 2-0 in the 84th minute, driving forward and finishing clinically to put the result beyond doubt. Then Vargas turned provider — his assist in the 90th minute found Manzambi again, and the substitute calmly converted his second of the night to make it 3-0. A brace from the bench. The man who had been watching from the sidelines for over an hour had changed the match entirely.

Bosnia and Herzegovina pulled one back through Ermin Mahmic in stoppage time — a late consolation that gave their long-suffering fans something to cheer, and the scoreline a degree of respectability. But Switzerland were not finished. A VAR review identified a handball inside the Bosnian penalty area, and captain Granit Xhaka stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick. Calm, measured, bottom corner. 4-1.

It was a fitting way for Xhaka to close out the performance — the captain’s authority written into the final act of the game.

Group B After Matchday 2

Switzerland move to four points with this win and sit comfortably in the top half of Group B. Their remaining Matchday 3 fixture — against Canada at BC Place in Vancouver on June 25 (12:30 AM IST) — will determine who tops the group and who takes the more favourable route into the knockout stages if Canada wins their match today against Qatar.

Bosnia and Herzegovina drop to the bottom of the table on one point, with their goal difference now significantly damaged. They face Qatar in their final group match, also on June 25, needing a win and favourable results elsewhere to have any hope of advancing.

For Switzerland, the story is simpler. Four points. A dominant second-half display. And a squad that showed — once a breakthrough arrives — they can put teams away in style. Manzambi announced himself on the biggest stage tonight. Switzerland will be hoping he is just getting started.
