Team analysis
USA
The Paraguay opener was everything Pochettino could have wanted in terms of result. An own goal in the 7th minute, a Balogun brace either side of half-time, and Reyna’s late trivela to make it 4-1. The concern is Pulisic — the USMNT captain came off at half-time with a calf injury and has been training separately since. Whether he starts here is the single biggest question surrounding this match. Without him, the creative burden falls further on Balogun and Reyna. Weston McKennie (Juventus) anchors the midfield.
Key player: Folarin Balogun— With or without Pulisic, Balogun is the focal point of the US attack. He scored twice against Paraguay and finished the season as Monaco’s top scorer with 19 goals across all competitions. He is sharp, confident, and capable of carrying a team’s attacking ambitions when the big name next to him is unavailable. If the USA go deep here, he needs to perform every game.
Australia
Tony Popovic’s side executed their opening match almost perfectly. They absorbed Türkiye’s early pressure, broke rapidly on the counter, and Nestory Irankunda’s cool finish made it 1-0 before Connor Metcalfe’s long-range drive sealed it in the 75th minute. Australia qualified through the Asian playoff route and entered this tournament with modest expectations. They have already exceeded them. Captain Mathew Ryan — heading into his fourth World Cup, now at Levante in the Spanish second division — is the experienced backbone. Mohamed Touré (Norwich City), 18 years old and with 9 Championship goals last season, gives them an electric option in forward areas alongside Irankunda.
Key player: Nestory Irankunda — Born a Burundian refugee in Tanzania, raised in Adelaide, and carrying Australia’s most dangerous attacking threat at 20. His goal against Türkiye made him the youngest Australian man to score at a FIFA World Cup. The Watford forward came through Bayern Munich’s academy and is electric on the counter — direct, fast, and composed. A USA defence that handled Paraguay well faces a very different proposition in Irankunda.
Head-to-head record
USA lead the all-time series 2-1-1. Australia won the first meeting 1-0 in 1992, but the USA have been unbeaten in the three encounters since — a 0-0 draw in 1998, and wins in 2010 and October 2025. The two nations have never met at a FIFA World Cup. Everything about this fixture is new territory.
Tactical preview
Pochettino will press high and look to dominate possession through McKennie and Tyler Adams, with Balogun’s runs in behind as the primary threat. Australia are built to be compact and dangerous in transition — exactly what undid Türkiye. They will cede territory and spring Irankunda and Touré on the counter. The home crowd gives the USA an enormous edge, but Australia’s gameplan is designed for opponents who come at them. Harry Souttar, back from a long Achilles injury, is a dead-ball threat worth monitoring.
Key storylines
- Christian Pulisic’s fitness — the AC Milan captain was forced off at half-time against Paraguay with a calf injury and has been training separately since. His teammates are optimistic. The medical staff are cautious. His availability shapes the entire structure of this USA attack.
- Nestory Irankunda against a top-five ranked defence — he sliced through Türkiye and has the profile to hurt any team on the counter. But the USA are better organised than Türkiye were. Whether Popovic’s gameplan can get Irankunda into space in behind will define Australia’s attacking threat.
- Group D leadership — a win here for either team virtually secures a place in the Round of 32. A draw keeps both alive but creates tension heading into Matchday 3. Neither side wants to go to the final group game needing a result.
Prediction and verdict
The USA at home in Seattle, with Balogun in form and Reyna off the bench, should have enough. Australia are well-organised and dangerous on the break, but the atmosphere and quality gap tips this to the hosts. The outcome here most likely is a draw.
