Round of 32 | San Francisco Bay Area Stadium | Wednesday, 2 July — 5:30 AM IST
How They Line Up
USA — 4-2-3-1
Matt Freese in goal. Alex Freeman at right-back, Miles Richards and Tim Ream as the centre-back pairing, Antonee Robinson at left-back. Tyler Adams and Malik Tillman in the double pivot: Adams handles the defensive work and covers the transition, pressing quickly and making it difficult to play through; Tillman provides the technical range and forward passing options to release the attackers quickly. Sergino Dest operates from the right of the three, Christian Pulisic from the right, and Weston McKennie from the centre. Folarin Balogun leads the line — two goals against Paraguay already on his account, clinical in the area.
Bosnia & Herzegovina — 4-4-2
Nikola Vasilj in goal. Dedic at right-back, Dino Katić and Tarik Muharemović as the centre-back pairing — Muharemović returning from the suspension he served against Qatar, and his reading of the game and organisation of the line were missed against a Qatari attack that should have been easier to contain. Sead Kolašinac is at left-back, one of the most experienced defenders in this squad. The midfield four are Esmir Bajraktarević from the right, Adnan Tahirović and Ivan Sunjić in the centre, and Memic from the left. Edin Džeko and Ermedin Demirović lead the attack. Džeko is the hold-up presence and captain who creates through positioning and intelligence; Demirović is the runner who exploits the spaces his partner generates.

The Battles That Will Decide This Match
Folarin Balogun vs Muharemović & Katić — Bosnia’s 4-4-2 leaves two centre-backs as the last line of defence, with Sunjić and Tahirović one step in front — further removed from the defensive line than a dedicated holding midfielder would be. That gap is exactly where Balogun operates. He doesn’t need space; he reads where it’s about to open. Against Paraguay, both goals came from sharp movement in and around the six-yard box before defenders could react. Muharemović’s return is significant — his reading of runners was missed against Qatar. But Balogun at this tournament has punished even organised defences, and his first-touch finishing in tight areas is a problem no two-man defensive unit has fully answered yet.
Christian Pulisic vs Dedić — Bosnia’s right back, Dedić face the most important task of Wednesday’s match: deny Pulisic the half-turn in the space between their defensive line and midfield four. In Bosnia’s 4-4-2, that zone opens when the shape stretches — the wide midfielders press the USA’s fullbacks, the two central midfielders step up to press Adams and Tillman, and suddenly the pocket behind them is exactly where Pulisic wants to arrive. He drops, spins, and plays within one touch. If he gets one good touch between the lines facing forward, the USA create from that position.
Edin Džeko vs Ream & Richards — Džeko at 40 doesn’t run much behind defenders anymore. His game is entirely about arriving into the pocket just ahead of the last line — taking a touch, holding under pressure, and laying off before the centre-back commits. Ream has the experience to read this movement early and deny the space before it develops. Richards is more physical and covers the second ball. The problem for the USA defence is what happens when Džeko receives and holds: Demirović makes the diagonal run, Bajraktarević arrives from the right, and Tahirović supports from deep. Bosnia’s attack is a system built around Džeko’s intelligence. Neutralise his first touch and Bosnia’s offensive mechanism stalls.
Esmir Bajraktarević vs Antonee Robinson — Bosnia’s most direct attacking player operates from the right midfield and will spend Wednesday evening targeting Robinson’s left-back position. Bajraktarević — 21, PSV Eindhoven, the player who scored the decisive penalty against Italy to send Bosnia to this World Cup — is quick, direct, and equally comfortable cutting inside or running the outside channel. Robinson has been USA’s best outfield performer in the group stage: aggressive in the press, committed in the tackle, strong in the air. If Bajraktarević gets in behind Robinson and delivers into the box for Džeko or Demirović, Bosnia create their most dangerous situations. If Robinson holds his position and forces the ball back inside, Bosnia’s most reliable attacking outlet is closed for the evening.
Tactical Breakdown
Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1 creates a central overload when Pulisic drops between the lines — Bosnia’s midfield four suddenly faces five USA players in the middle zone, and the decision of who presses and who covers becomes critical. Adams and Tillman protect the defensive structure and allow Freeman and Robinson to push higher on both flanks, adding width and crossing threat. The design is simple: overload centrally, create the pass into Balogun, and get the first goal before Bosnia’s defensive organisation can settle.
Bosnia’s 4-4-2 holds compactly and invites the USA to build around them, then quickly releases Džeko and Demirović when possession is won. The two wide midfielders — Bajraktarević and Memic — must do their defensive work before they can attack, pressing USA’s fullbacks and preventing overlaps. When Bosnia win the ball in their own half, the first pass goes to whoever Džeko is pointing at. The transitions are fast, direct, and designed to catch USA’s double pivot before it can recover its position. How Adams handles this moment of transition determines Bosnia’s chances of creating something meaningful in San Francisco.
The Decisive Factor
The question is whether Tyler Adams can control the transition phase between Bosnia winning possession and Džeko receiving the first pass. Bosnia’s 4-4-2 lives in these moments — the ball is turned over, the two strikers move, and if the central midfield can deliver quickly enough, the USA defence has two runners to deal with before it can reorganise. Adams’ pressing range and positioning in the defensive phase are what prevent Bosnia from playing through the USA press and reaching Džeko with a forward ball. If he intercepts the first pass or forces Bosnia backwards, Pochettino’s side control the match. If Džeko gets his touches early and Demirović is running alongside him, Bosnia are dangerous until the final whistle.
