From Yamal’s first World Cup goal to Egypt’s first World Cup victory in history, the last 24 hours have delivered moments this tournament will be remembered for. Four matches, four stories worth telling. Here is everything that happened.

Spain 4-0 Saudi Arabia | Group H | Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

The doubts after Spain’s goalless draw with Cape Verde lasted precisely ten minutes. Lamine Yamal opened his FIFA World Cup 2026™ account by sliding home a Mikel Oyarzabal cross, and from there it was one-way traffic. Oyarzabal scored twice in three minutes — a bundled close-range finish in the 21st from Álex Baena’s corner and a second in the 24th — and rattled the crossbar in the 37th, narrowly missing a first-half hat-trick. An own goal from Hassan Altambakti early in the second half completed the rout. Spain top Group H on four points heading into their final game against Uruguay. Saudi Arabia are effectively out.

Belgium 0-0 Iran | Group G | SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles

Twenty-two shots. Fifty-nine per cent possession. A man sent off. No goal. Belgium’s evening at the Los Angeles Stadium was defined by one man — Alireza Beiranvand — whose performance in the Iran goal was as good as any individual display this tournament has seen. He saved everything: Tielemans’ near-post drive, a De Cuyper point-blank effort, and more. Iran themselves came close — a Taremi goal was ruled out by VAR in the 25th minute, marginal offside. Belgian centre-back Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red card in the 66th minute for pulling down Taremi on a clear run. Belgium pushed until the 90th minute — Dodi Lukébakio’s curling effort missed the far post by centimetres. Both teams remain on two points in Group G, with Iran fractionally ahead on goal difference.

Uruguay 2-2 Cape Verde | Group H | Hard Rock Stadium, Miami

Cape Verde’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ debut keeps getting better. Kevin Pina’s stunning 32-metre direct free kick — splitting the wall past Fernando Muslera — gave the debutants a 1-0 lead and their first-ever goal in World Cup history. Uruguay fought back through Maximiliano Araújo (44th) and Agustín Canobbio (45+6′), only for substitute Hélio Varela to capitalise on a catastrophic miscommunication between Muslera and Mathías Olivera, tapping into an empty net in the 61st minute. Federico Valverde’s free kick cleared the bar in the 90th. Cape Verde held on through eight minutes of stoppage time. Both sides sit on two points in Group H, with Spain four ahead at the summit.

Egypt 3-1 New Zealand | Group G | BC Place, Vancouver

History was made in Vancouver. Egypt secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory — 92 years after their first appearance — with a composed second-half comeback at BC Place. New Zealand led through Finn Surman’s 15th-minute header, but Egypt turned it around after the break: Mostafa Ziko headed in an equaliser in the 58th, Mohamed Salah slotted home the lead goal in the 67th, and substitute Trézéguet sealed it with a clinical header in the 82nd. Salah left the pitch to a standing ovation in the 85th minute, having contributed a goal and an assist. Egypt top Group G on four points. The Pharaohs are not just competing — they are winning.

Tonight: Argentina vs Austria | Group J | Dallas Stadium | 10:30 PM IST

The biggest name in world football returns to the pitch. Lionel Messi, who scored a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening win over Algeria, leads La Albiceleste into their second group game against Austria. Argentina enter as heavy favorites, but Austria — who beat Jordan in their opener — have shown enough tactical discipline to make this uncomfortable. Kick-off is at 10:30 PM IST tonight.
