Australia vs Egypt
FIFA World Cup 2026

Egypt lead Australia 1–0 at the interval in their FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 32 match at the Dallas Stadium. Emam Ashour’s powerful header in the 13th minute — the Pharaohs’ very first shot on target — separated the sides after a first half that swung sharply from Australian threat to Egyptian dominance and then back to a more competitive contest. Seven Australian attempts to Egypt’s four, yet Egypt go in ahead.

Australia Almost Scored Before Salah’s Side Had Touched the Ball

It nearly started perfectly for the Socceroos. In the 4th minute, Cristian Volpato collected the ball outside the box and drove a powerful strike toward goal — it crashed off the top of the crossbar. A few centimetres lower and Australia would have had the lead before Egypt had settled.

Three minutes later, Australia nearly struck again. Jordan Bos made a slicing run into the box with real intent — only a perfectly timed sliding tackle from Egyptian defender Rami Rabia ended the move. Two early openings. Nothing to show for either of them.

Ashour’s Finish, Egypt Lead

Egypt needed one moment of quality, and Mohamed Salah provided the trigger. In the 13th minute, he initiated a clever free-kick routine — a quick flick to Emam Ashour, whose initial shot was blocked. The ball broke to Karim Hafez on the right wing. Hafez’s cross to the back post was precise. Ashour, completely unmarked, met it with a powerful header. 1–0. His second goal of the tournament, and Egypt had scored it from their first meaningful effort on target.

The Pharaohs grew in confidence immediately. In the 20th minute, Mostafa Zico was played clean through and looked certain to double the lead — he dragged his left-footed shot wide, and the linesman’s offside flag went up anyway. A minute later, Harry Souttar threw himself into the path of an Omar Marmoush effort to keep the deficit at one. Egypt were the dominant force, and Australia were hanging on.

Australia Grow Into the Half

The hydration break changed the rhythm. Australia steadied, began winning second balls, and started to push higher up the pitch. They did not create a clear chance in the remainder of the half, but the shift in control was visible — seven shots to Egypt’s four by the whistle, even if none of Australia’s second-half attempts seriously tested the Egyptian goalkeeper.

The first-half story, though, belongs to Egypt. Salah’s orchestration of the opening goal underlines what he brings to this side even in a facilitating role. Ashour’s clinical header was the difference. Australia hit the crossbar before Egypt had drawn breath, and they still go in behind.

What Needs to Happen

Australia need a goal to stay alive. They have shown they can threaten — Volpato’s crossbar and Bos’s run in the opening minutes showed attacking intent. What they lacked was the final touch. Forty-five minutes remain.

Egypt need to manage the game. They have a lead, a clean sheet, and Salah still carriescarrying the ball with purpose. If they can absorb Australian pressure in the early stages of the second half and find a second goal, they will move on to the Round of 16.
