FIFA World Cup 2026

Egypt have waited a long time for this. The Pharaohs walked off the pitch at BC Place in Vancouver having secured their first-ever victory in FIFA World Cup history. It was not straightforward — New Zealand led inside 15 minutes and had chances to extend their advantage. But Egypt’s second-half response was authoritative: a comeback built on persistence, Mostafa Ziko’s equaliser, Mohamed Salah’s decisive goal, and Trézéguet sealing it with a clinical header. Three-one. History made. Egypt top Group G.

New Zealand Strike First

The All Whites made the brighter start. In the 14th minute, Elijah Just — already one of the tournament’s standout performers — burst down the left channel and forced a sharp near-post save from Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. The corner that followed was not wasted. Tim Payne whipped it in, and defender Finn Surman, completely unmarked in the six-yard box, powered a textbook header into the net. New Zealand 1-0 Egypt. BC Place roared.

Egypt absorbed the blow. Hamdy Fathy went down with an injury in the 42nd minute and was replaced by Ramy Rabia — a disruption Egypt could have done without before the break. Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, stepped up for a free kick in the 34th minute after Callum McCowatt was booked for a hard tackle. It curled wide. Egypt went into half-time trailing, searching for answers.

The Moment That Turned the Game

Egypt came out transformed after the interval. Salah forced a toe-poke save from Max Crocombe within two minutes of the restart — a statement of intent. Then, in the 52nd minute, New Zealand had a chance to put the match beyond Egypt’s reach. Callum McCowatt arrived at a close-range header that looked certain to go in. Shobeir produced a spectacular fingertip save over the crossbar. It was one of those moments. Had that gone in, the story of this match would have been very different.

Instead, Egypt equalised six minutes later. Mohamed Hany delivered a first-time cross from the right wing, finding Mostafa Ziko unmarked at the far post. The header was clean and controlled. Shobeir’s save had given Egypt life; Ziko gave them their equaliser. The momentum had flipped entirely.

Salah Takes Over — and Takes His Bow

Egypt’s captain needed no further invitation. In the 67th minute, Salah found space in a central attacking position and slotted the ball past Crocombe with the calm assurance of someone who has scored in far bigger arenas.

Trézéguet, introduced from the bench in the second half, completed the scoring in the 82nd minute — a clinical header that put the result beyond any doubt. It was off a corner from Salah. Egypt 3-1 New Zealand. In the 85th minute, with his goal and assist registered, Salah was substituted off to a roaring standing ovation from the large Egyptian contingent at BC Place. The noise was extraordinary. This was what they had come to see.

Crocombe denied Egypt a fourth in the 92nd minute, keeping a late breakaway out to preserve the final scoreline. It did not matter. Three goals were enough.

Group G — Egypt at the Summit

Egypt’s win, combined with their opening draw against Belgium, puts them top of Group G on four points — in an excellent position to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time. Belgium and Iran are both on two points going into the final round of group games. New Zealand, having drawn their opener against Iran, now sit on a single point and face a difficult path to the knockouts.

For Egypt, this is not just a result. It is a moment. A nation that has followed this tournament as spectators for nearly a century finally has a World Cup victory to celebrate. The Pharaohs are not just participating. They are competing.
