Four matches. Four talking points. June 21 delivered one of the most action-packed days of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ so far — a five-goal Dutch masterclass, a German comeback for the ages, a goalkeeping performance that defied belief, and a historic Japanese rout. Here is everything that happened.
Netherlands 5-1 Sweden | Group F | NRG Stadium, Houston
The Oranje put on a show. Brian Brobbey had the ball in the net twice before the 20th minute — a tap-in off a Cody Gakpo cross in the fifth, and a cool finish from a Denzel Dumfries pass in the 17th. Sweden, to their credit, created three genuine chances to make it 2-1 before half-time: a Gyökeres shot tipped away by Verbruggen, a Lagerbielke header ruled out by VAR for offside, and a Gyökeres free-kick parried around the post. None of them went in. Gakpo put the game to bed two minutes into the second half, added a second brace in the 54th, and Crysencio Summerville capped an extraordinary evening with a fifth in the 89th. Anthony Elanga, on as a substitute, pulled one back in the 59th — but it was merely a consolation. Netherlands are flying.

Germany 2-1 Ivory Coast | Group E | BMO Field, Toronto
This one went to the 94th minute. Germany had the ball in the net twice in the first half and had both disallowed — the first one ruled out for a foul on the keeper, and a second goal chalked off for offside. Then Franck Kessié stabbed in Ivory Coast’s opener in the 30th minute off a scramble in the box, and Germany spent an hour trying to find a way back. Julian Nagelsmann’s triple substitution at the hour mark changed everything. Deniz Undav, one of the three subs, volleyed Germany level in the 68th minute. Then, deep into stoppage time, Felix Nmecha threaded a pass through for Undav — who cushioned it and buried it. Germany 2-1. A place in the Round of 32 confirmed. Two group-stage exits in a row, in 2018 and 2022, feel like a very distant memory tonight.

Ecuador 0-0 Curaçao | Group E | Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City
Eloy Room. Remember the name. The Curaçao goalkeeper produced one of the most extraordinary individual displays in recent World Cup memory — a fingertip save from Valencia in the third minute, a parried Plata header in the 58th, and several more interventions across 95 minutes to earn his nation a point that feels enormous. Ecuador had 63 per cent of the ball, created chance after chance, and walked away with nothing. The crossbar denied them in the 82nd minute. VAR declined to give a stoppage-time penalty. It is the second successive match in which Ecuador have dominated and failed to convert — they lost to Ivory Coast in their opener despite controlling large stretches of that game. The pattern is becoming a concern.

Japan 4-0 Tunisia | Group F | Estadio BBVA, Monterrey
The 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history produced a performance to match the occasion. Daichi Kamada scored Japan’s fastest-ever World Cup goal in the fourth minute, and it only got better from there. Ayase Ueda added a low drive in the 31st, set up Junya Ito for the third in the 69th, and completed the scoring with a looping header in the 83rd. Two goals and an assist — a masterclass from a striker at the very peak of his confidence. Tunisia were officially eliminated with this defeat. Japan, meanwhile, sit level with the Netherlands at the top of Group F on four points. The Samurai Blue are in remarkable form.
