Here’s all you need to know about Zee TV’s first serial Tara, on the occasion of World Television Day, starring Navneet Nishan and Amita Nangia.

Featuring actors Navneet Nishan as Tara and Amita Nangia as Sheena, the show Tara was one of Zee TV’s first daily soap. Tara was the first Hindi language drama series which ran for about 5 years. It revolved around the story of contemporary urban women and her friends. World Television Day stands as a reminder of the power of visual media and how it helps in shaping public opinion and influencing world politics. On the occasion of World Television Day, here are a few facts about the show.

1) Included an ensemble cast

Tara starred an ensemble cast of actors Navneet Nishan, Amita Nangia, Rakesh Bedi, Alok Nath, Ratna Pathak Shah and Neha Sharad. The story of Tara revolved around the life of Tara and the lives of three other friends Kanchan, Arzoo and Sheena. It was one of the best shows during its time and was highly appreciated by the audience for the actors’ performances and the storyline.

2) The show was ahead of its time

The show Tara followed the life of Tara, a teenage girl who falls in love with a married man. She was seen as a woman who lived by her own rules. Navneet’s character as Tara was about a woman who has a child out of wedlock. In that sense, the show was truly ahead of its time and was loved by the audience.

3) When the show created an outrage

The show portrayed several characters who were outrageous but one such scene was the kiss between Navneet and Deepak Seth. That kiss came as a shock to the audience. Even films did not show kissing scenes on the screen at that time and Tara was one of the first shows to do so.

4) First-ever Indian soap on contemporary urban women

Tara was one of the most popular Hindi TV shows with a completely different story track. The protagonist women on the show were shown smoking and drinking on-screen. It was also the first Indian soap on contemporary urban women. The show was supposed to air 52 episodes but went on to air 500 episodes for 5 years.

5) Navneet Nishan became famous as ‘Tara’ and no one remembered her real name

Navneet Nishan was popular for her character as Tara. Interestingly, the actor had become so popular for her show Tara that she was known as her character’s name and nobody remembered her real name.
