ZEE5 brings to its audiences the latest original series Kannamoochi, which is an engaging tale where mysticism meets investigation. Helmed by Avinaash Hariharan, the crime thriller stars Poorna, Vivek Prasanna, Amzath Khan, Bose Venkat and Aaradhya in prominent roles. Here’s our complete review of the spine chiller that’s currently streaming on the ZEE5 platform, Kannamoochi.

Watcht The trailer of Kannamoochi here:

The Story

Kannamoochi revolves around Priya (Poorna), a single parent with a special girl child, Aishu (alias Aishwarya), with cognitive speech impairment. As Priya, along with her (deaf and mute) daughter, moves to a new apartment in Chennai to start life afresh after her husband’s death, the mother-daughter duo is spooked by a series of weird incidents taking place within the vicinity of their residence. It looks like, destiny had something else planned for them. And one fine day, Priya loses her daughter during a religious procession. Only during her search mission, she uncovers a shocking revelation about an incident that occurred 20 years ago at the new apartment she recently shifted to. She finds out the truth about the sixth floor, which is believed to be haunted after one of its residents had committed suicide back then. But the question is will the mother be successful in her quest?

Analysis

Kannamoochi makes for gripping viewing, but at the same time, it is also menacing and haunting. Like any good horror story, a couple of scenes will make you cringe and some others will surely scare the hell out of you, courtesy its amazing background score. Starting out with an innocent game of kannamoochi (hide and seek), the director has beautifully extracted an intricate tale out of it.

Performances

Poorna’s character Priya is portrayed as a bold yet vulnerable single mother. The actress, who has done a lot of films (in Telugu) in the same genre, gives an amazing performance. She also made sure that her acting does not come across too melodramatic and manages to hold our attention and walk us through her journey. Another brilliant performance is given by actor Radhakrishnan, who portrayed the role of a merciless psychopath killer, who preyed on young girls to satisfy his needs. His inhumane acts not only worry but also creates anger among us and that itself is enough to explain how good he has been on screen, playing the role of a doctor. And now we know why the makers kept his character under wraps until release. Amzath Khan and Vivek Prasanna’s roles are rather brief. Given their extraordinary acting abilities, we think they could have been used more.

Bankrolled by Arabbhi Athyreya, Raja Ramamurthy, Chidambaram Natesan under their respective banner names, the music for the film is scored by Sundaramurthy KS. And cinematographer Prasanna S Kumar did his best to support Avinaash’s narration. Stay tuned!
