Extramarital affairs can be messy, successful or could even lead to murders. Check out various shades of an extramarital affair as explored by Zee.

Neha Marda and Siddhaanth Vir Surryavanshi starrer ‘Kyun Rishton Mein Katti Batti‘ explores what is considered one of the biggest taboos of the society, an extramarital affair. While we all sympathise with the wife, Shubhra we hate Samaira for destroying the former’s happy family. But that is the notion of this show. Extramarital affairs haven’t always been shown in the same light. While in Shubhra’s case she wasn’t really to blame, in some cases the spouses were responsible for the extramarital affair. Let’s take a look at how Zee has explored these various shades of an extramarital affair.

Meanwhile, check out what’s happening on Kyun Rishton Mein Katti Batti:

Hasratein

When we say Zee was way ahead of its time, this is what we mean. A show in the ’90s that tried to portray an extramarital affair in a different light. Hasratein starring Seema Kapoor, Harsh Chhaya, Himani Shivpuri and Shefali Shah emphasised on the societal strains placed on marriages. The story of the show follows Savi, who leaves her husband and maintains an extramarital affair with another married man. This popular show talked about the successes of extramarital affairs and triggered a conversation around the topic as well.

Astitva

This Tabu starrer focuses on various topics such as an extramarital affair, domestic violence, misogyny, etc. Astitva revolves around the story of Aditi, a newlywed woman who is abandoned by her husband as he runs behind success. Her loneliness and feeling of abandonment get the best of her and she ends up with another man in a moment of weakness. The movie then follows how a single moment of weakness on her part is considered a sin whereas her husband’s flaws are completely ignored. The movie also stars, Mohnish Bahl and Sachin Khedekar in prominent roles.

Woh Apna Sa

This fresh take on an extramarital affair completely changed people’s perception of the topic. Wo Apna Sa focused on the story of Nisha(Ridhi Dogra), Arjun(Sudeep Sahir) and Jia(Disha Parmar). It shows a completely different side of the situation, where a dominating, evil wife and her egoistic behaviour pushes poor Arjun towards Jia. The show also shows the ‘other woman’ Jia in a very positive light.

Rustom

Extramarital affairs aren’t only limited to dramas. This Bollywood film starring Akshay Kumar, Ileana D’Cruz, Arjan Bajwa and Esha Gupta was loosely based on the KM Nanavati case, where the husband kills his acquaintance on knowing that his wife has been having an affair with him. The story of Rustom follows the court proceeding of the same, although with creative liberty. The end of the film has been tweaked to suit the audience.

The Verdict – State Vs Nanavati

While Rustom was loosely based on the KM Nanavati case, The Verdict is a much accurate retelling of the story. It revolves around the return of Indian naval commander K.M. Nanavati and his reaction to his wife Sylvia’s affair with Prem Ahuja. Unlike the film, the series starring Manav Kaul, Elli Avram, Sumeet Vyas and Viraf Patel ended in compliance with the actual events that followed the murder.

Expiry Date

Another murder thriller that was triggered due to an extramarital affair is Expiry Date. The show starring Tony Luke, Sneha Ullal, and Madhushalini focuses along similar lines of how a spouse reacts to the other having an extramarital affair. The show also emphasises on the consequences of not keeping one’s emotions in check under such circumstances.

Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain

This show was another refreshing take on the whole debate around an extramarital affair. The ‘other woman’ Ananya(Mona Singh) wasn’t shown as a vamp, but as a very sweet understanding woman who provides companionship to Rohit(Ronit Roy). The best part about Kehne Ko Humsafar Hai is that although the wife, Poonam(Gurdeep Kohli) tries hard to save her marriage, once its over, she doesn’t sit crying in a corner. In fact, she utilizes that time to focus on herself, work on herself, and make herself happy.

Kyun Rishton Mein Katti Batti

This latest addition to the shows based on an extramarital affair focuses on the one aspect we’ve forgotten about in the past few years. While understanding both sides of the story is important, and sometimes the spouse can be wrong too. We also can’t deny the fact that many women like Shubhra(Neha Marda) get the shorter end of the stick in such situations. Kyun Rishton Mein Katti Batti follows Shubhra’s journey of trying to save her family from falling apart as Kuldeep(Siddhaanth Vir Surryavanshi) and Samaira’s(Sapna Thakur) affair is brought to light.
