7 Movies That Show Varanasi Through The Eyes Of Bollywood Like Raanjhanaa

Varanasi, the holy city of India, which is also known by the names Banaras and Kashi, has been a shooting space for many Indian films. With its picturesque locations like its ghats, its temples, and the river Ganga, and its cultural and historical importance, the city of Varanasi itself becomes an important part of the films that are shot there, like Masaan. Issaq

Starring Prateik Babbar and Amyra Dastur in the lead roles, Issaq is an Indian version of Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. The film revolves around two young lovers, whose families are strong rivals. These two families are two powerful land mafias of the city of Banaras. The film also stars Ravi Kishan, Neena Gupta, and Makrand Deshpande.

Bhaiaji Superhit

Bhaiaji Superhit is an action comedy film, starring Sunny Deol, Arshad Warsi, Preity Zinta, and Shreyas Talpade. The film revolves around the story of a powerful don based in Banaras, who wants to become an actor in Bollywood. The movie is set in Varanasi, but we only see the parts of the palace of the don, played by Sunny Deol.

Setters

Setters, starring Shreyas Talpade, Aftab Shivdasani, Vijay Raaz, and Sonalli Seygall. The film revolves around an examination mafia of Varanasi, that organizes cheating in several entrance exams of the country, for money. We get to see a lot of the city in this film, with certain scenes set on the river ghats of the city.

Raanjhanaa

Raanjhanaa is probably one of the most famous Bollywood films to be shot in Banaras. Starring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, and Abhay Deol, the film revolves around the life of a young boy, Kundan, who lives in Banaras, and is crazily in love with a girl who is also from the city. In Raanjhanaa too, we get to see a lot of the city’s streets and ghats and they make this movie visually striking. 

Kaashi: In Search Of Ganga

Kaashi: In Search Of Ganga is another Bollywood film set in Banaras, in which we get to see a beautiful tour of the city. Set completely in the holy city, the film has multiple scenes where we get to see the ghats and the streets of Banaras. Starring Sharman Joshi and Aishwarya Devan, the film revolves around the story of a young man, Kaashi, who is searching for his sister, Ganga.

Mulk

Mulk, starring Taapsee Pannu, Rishi Kapoor, and Manoj Pahwa, is a courtroom drama that is also set in Varanasi. The film revolves around the story of a family that is fighting for justice to remove the tag of ‘terrorists’ that they got because of the acts of their young son.

Dream Girl

Dream Girl, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Nushrratt Bharuccha, is another film that is set in Banaras. Dream Girl also takes us through a lot of beautiful locations of the city, like the streets, the ghats, and the boat rides in Ganga. The film revolves around the story of a man who works in a call centre, by impersonating his voice as that of a woman.
