Holi
Holi is a 2010 Kannada dram film starring Ragini, Venkatesh Prasad and Doddanna. Holi is the sister of a Devadasi. According to village rituals Holi is also made a Devadasi at a young age. This makes her the property of village Gowda. Kamanna, village chieftain’s son, falls in love with Holi and wants to marry her. However, villagers are opposed to this as Devadasi’s are not supposed to get married and so Kamanna is thrown out of the village. How will Kamanna marry Holi?

Holi: An existence belying the name
Holi is an action film that dwells on the Devadasi system wherein young girls are subjected to a life of celibacy and solitary existence for their entire lives. At a very young age, Holi is made a Devadasi, a term originally ascribed to temple dancers who had to abide by the orders of the priests. This authority subsequently passed on to the village heads.
In the movie, Holi goes on to become the property of the village head (Gowda). A highly respected man named Srikrishna Desai lives in the village, and he has a son called Kamanna who is deeply in love with Holi. Thus, a bitter clash between Gowda and Kamanna is inevitable.
The outdated and repressive practice of Devadasi still exists today in some Indian societies.
