6th Minute — France’s Early Aggression

For the first few minutes, France looked like the side Deschamps had promised in his pre-match press conference: direct, dangerous, and intent on making Spain uncomfortable. Bradley Barcola got the ball wide on the left, showed his blistering pace to skin a sliding Spanish defender, and cut sharply into the penalty area. The resulting cross won France an early corner. The tone was set — France were not here to sit back and absorb.

21st Minute — Yamal’s Intelligence, Digne’s Nightmare

The penalty that changed the match was not a dive. It was worse than that — it was elite football intelligence from a nineteen-year-old. Lamine Yamal read the flight of a high, looping ball into the box perfectly. He exploded into the space, and wedged his body in front of Digne just a split-second early enough. Digne, unaware of Yamal, kicked through him rather than the ball. The contact was undeniable. The penalty was given. The French player protested, focusing mainly on what they claimed was a handball in the build-up. But it went nowhere.

22nd Minute — GOAL: Oyarzabal 1-0

Mikel Oyarzabal did not flinch. He stepped up, waited for Mike Maignan to commit, and rolled the penalty to the right. Clean, calm, and conclusive. Spain lead. France — for the first time in this FIFA World Cup 2026™ — were behind.

Saliba Forced Off — France’s Defensive Crisis Deepens

Within minutes of conceding, William Saliba was unable to continue. He had been passed fit despite missing a training block this week. He was forced off, disrupting France’s central defensive partnership and handing De la Fuente’s side a structural advantage they had not needed to earn. Lacroix, his replacement, will have to hold the line in the second half against Yamal, Olmo, and a Spain attack now carrying full momentum.

37th Minute — Spain Carve France Open Again

The near-miss in the 37th minute showed exactly why France cannot afford to give Spain time on the ball. A dreadful clearance from Maignan — under pressure — handed Spain possession in a dangerous area. Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal combined on the flank with the kind of instinctive, rapid movement that makes this Spain side so difficult to track. Yamal’s pass slid through to Fabián Ruiz arriving in the box. Ruiz shot the ball, but it went wide.

42nd Minute — Simón’s Brilliance Denies Mbappé

France’s best moment came with three minutes left in the half. Adrien Rabiot found the perfect pass — a defence-splitting ball down the inside-left channel, weighted to perfection — and Mbappé timed his diagonal run exactly right, breaking past the Spanish backline to arrive clean through on goal. It looked like 1-1. But Unai Simón was already moving. He sprinted off his line, judged the angle, and arrived a split-second ahead of Mbappé to sweep the ball away with his feet. A world-class save, from a keeper who has been the quietest member of Spain’s squad all tournament.

Half-Time Verdict

Spain have been the better side and deserve their lead. Their press has been relentless, their ball movement sharp, and Yamal has already been the best player on the pitch. France are still in this — they always are — but they need a completely different second half. Saliba’s injury means their defensive shape must be rebuilt on the fly. Mbappé’s runs are getting in behind, but he needs the ball sooner. And France cannot afford another loose Maignan clearance.

The semi-final is alive. But Spain hold all the momentum heading into the second 45 minutes.
