Thirty-six years. That is how long Scotland waited for this moment.

John McGinn’s goal gave Steve Clarke’s side a 1–0 victory over Haiti at Gillette Stadium in Boston, and with it, Scotland’s first World Cup win since Italy 1990. The Tartan Army, who had endured decades of near-misses, playoff heartbreaks, and group-stage exits, finally had something to celebrate at football’s biggest tournament.

It was not pretty. Haiti made them sweat for every minute of it. But at the final whistle, the scoreboard was all that mattered.

Scotland start fast, Haiti find their feet.

Clarke set his side up to press high and win the ball early, and for the opening exchanges Scotland carried real menace. In the 18th minute, Scott McTominay burst forward on a rapid counter-attack and drove a shot against the post. The rebound was scrambled clear. The warning was there.

Haiti, though, were not overawed. The Caribbean side grew into the match quickly, using their pace in transition to create dangerous moments on the break. They outshot Scotland 8–7 in the first half alone — a statistic that tells its own story — but a disciplined Scottish offside trap repeatedly frustrated their runners and kept the scoresheet blank.

McGinn’s deflected strike breaks the deadlock.

The goal came in the 27th minute, and it arrived via a sequence of pressure and fortune combined. Ché Adams drove into the Haitian box and forced goalkeeper Johny Placide into a sharp stop. McGinn arrived at pace, struck it cleanly on the rebound, and watched it clip off a defender and loop into the net.

It was not the kind of goal you draw up on a tactics board. But Scotland’s players swarmed McGinn regardless. A deflection, maybe. A moment of persistence, absolutely.

Haiti were aggrieved — and they showed it. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was booked in the 38th minute after a reckless challenge on a Scottish player as Haiti’s frustration began to boil over.

Scotland held their nerve in the second half.

Haiti pushed relentlessly after the break. Their pace on the counterattack was a persistent threat, and Scotland’s defensive structure was repeatedly tested. Aaron Hickey picked up a yellow card just minutes into the second half — a reminder of how close Scotland were to the edge throughout.

The 74th and 75th minutes brought a flurry of changes. Haiti introduced Lenny Joseph, throwing pace and directness at a tiring Scottish backline. Clarke responded pragmatically: Ryan Christie and Lyndon Dykes were substituted to absorb the pressure rather than chase a second goal.

That caution nearly came back to bite them. McGinn squandered a golden chance to double Scotland’s lead when he dragged a close-range effort wide — the kind of miss that can haunt a team in the dying minutes of a tight match.

And tight it became. In the 85th minute, a cross into the Scottish box found Frantzdy Pierrot in space. His point-blank header looked destined for the net — but it glanced just past Angus Gunn’s right-hand post. Half an inch. The entire Tartan Army breathed again simultaneously.

What this means for Group C

Scotland move to three points at the top of Group C. It is a platform, not a guarantee, but after so many years of World Cup heartbreak, even a platform feels significant for Scottish football.

Haiti, for their part, were not disgraced. They created chances, matched Scotland’s shot count, and pushed hard for an equaliser right up to the 90th minute. Their next matches against Morocco and Brazil will test them in different ways, but there are signs of an organised, dangerous side here.

For Indian fans watching the FIFA World Cup 2026™ at 6:30 AM IST, this was a reminder that the early Group C matches are anything but predictable. Scotland’s 36-year wait is over. The tournament has barely begun.
