Kylian Mbappé — 7 Goals, 2 Assists (France)
Mbappé leads on the tiebreaker. Seven goals across France’s campaign — two against Senegal, two against Iraq, two against Sweden, and one in the Round of 32 against Paraguay — plus two assists. No other player in the top three has an assist to their name. That alone keeps him above Messi and Haaland for now. France are through to the quarter-finals, meaning Mbappé has more opportunities to pull clear.
-
Lionel Messi — 7 Goals, 0 Assists (Argentina)
Messi has been relentless. Three goals against Algeria, two against Austria, one against Jordan in the group stage, and his 20th FIFA World Cup goal against Cabo Verde in the Round of 32 take him to seven for the tournament. No assists — but he is yet to play Argentina’s Round of 16 match against Egypt. He and Haaland are joint-second on goal difference alone, with FIFA criteria yet to separate them.
-
Erling Haaland — 7 Goals, 0 Assists (Norway)
The man of the moment. Haaland was relatively quiet through the group stage — two goals each against Iraq and Senegal, one against Ivory Coast — but his brace against Brazil in the Round of 16 has propelled him into the top three. Seven goals, zero assists, and Norway are through to the quarter-final for the first time in their history. If Haaland continues scoring at this rate, he will be very difficult to stop.
-
Harry Kane — 6 Goals, 0 Assists (England)
Kane sits one behind the trio at the top. Five goals across the group stage and Round of 32, plus his penalty against Mexico in the Round of 16, gives him six. Six goals is a serious tally, and England’s run continues. A quarter-final against Norway and a potential Haaland-Kane head-to-head in the same match adds an intriguing sub-plot.
Dembélé, Oyarzabal, Bellingham — 4 Goals Each
Three players share the next tier. Ousmane Dembélé leads the group on assists with four goals and two assists, while Mikel Oyarzabal (four goals, one assist) and Jude Bellingham (four goals, one assist) round out a competitive cluster. Bellingham’s two goals against Mexico in the Round of 16 were his most important yet. Oyarzabal’s Spain are still in the tournament. All three remain live contenders if the top three stumble.
The Chasing Pack
Johan Manzambi (three goals, two assists) leads a group of four players on three goals each. Folarin Balogun has three goals and an assist. Cristiano Ronaldo and Ismael Saibari are both on three goals but without an assist between them. For Ronaldo in particular, with Portugal still in the tournament and facing Spain next, a big performance could bring him back into the conversation rapidly.
The Golden Boot will not be decided until July 20. Seven goals may not be enough to win it.
