Group H | Estadio Akron, Guadalajara | Jun 27, 2026 | 5:30 AM IST
Match Overview
Spain head into Group H’s final matchday already through to the Round of 32. First place and the bracket are what’s at stake for them. Uruguay are in a trickier position — two draws leave them on two points. A win tonight is the guaranteed route through. A draw might do depending on Cape Verde versus Saudi Arabia. A loss, and they go home.

Uruguay — Team Analysis
Marcelo Bielsa’s side has been resilient but not clinical. They fell behind to Saudi Arabia and clawed back through Araújo to draw 1-1. Against Cape Verde, they recovered from a goal down to lead 2-1, only to concede a 61st-minute equaliser. Fighting spirit is clear; closing games out isn’t. They need to find a way to do that here.
The talent is world-class. Federico Valverde — Real Madrid’s tireless, all-action midfielder — is one of the best in the world at what he does. Darwin Núñez provides the physical focal point, Ugarte (Manchester United) shields from midfield, and de Arrascaeta creates between the lines. This squad has the quality to hurt Spain.
Key Player: Federico Valverde — Uruguay’s engine and their most important player. Tireless in both directions, with the vision to set attacks and the relentless work rate to stop them. A monster shift is needed tonight.
Spain — Team Analysis
Spain looked measured in their opening draw against Cape Verde, with Yamal absent after a hamstring injury. The second game told a different story — he scored in the 10th minute against Saudi Arabia. Oyarzabal added two more before half-time. A statement.
De la Fuente has built the team around Pedri, with Rodri captaining from midfield and Cucurella providing defensive solidity. The 4-0 against Saudi Arabia proved the identity works.
Key Player: Lamine Yamal — At 18, already the most dangerous attacker in this tournament and Uruguay’s biggest defensive problem. He is the youngest player to ever start a La Liga game and the youngest to start a Champions League game.
Head-to-Head
Ten meetings, Uruguay yet to win one. Spain leads with five wins, zero losses, and five draws. Their two World Cup encounters — 1950 (2-2) and 1990 (0-0) — both finished level. Uruguay need a first-ever win against Spain tonight. The weight of that history is one more thing Bielsa will use to motivate his players.
Tactical Preview
Bielsa’s Uruguay are intense and direct. Valverde sits box to box — pressing high, recovering quickly, launching attacks with driving runs. Ugarte shields the defence aggressively, giving Valverde the freedom to get forward. Núñez stretches Spain’s back line and wins duels in the air. Against possession-heavy sides, their high press can be effective if sustained.
Spain will look to control the game through Pedri and Rodri and drag Uruguay out of shape. Yamal on the right will target Uruguay’s left channel — speed and directness against a defence that has been breached in both games. De la Fuente won’t overcomplicate it. If Spain plays its game, the quality gap should show.
Key Storylines
- Uruguay have never beaten Spain in ten meetings. That record stretches through decades of international football, two World Cup encounters, and a Confederations Cup match. Bielsa is an obsessive preparer who will know every Spanish pattern. But knowing is different from executing, and Uruguay will need their best night against a side with genuine quality throughout.
- Spain’s squad contains no Real Madrid players — a remarkable first for a Spanish team in decades. De la Fuente turned to Barcelona and La Liga’s domestic scene instead, with eight of the 26 coming from Camp Nou alone. The 4-0 against Saudi Arabia answered those who questioned the philosophy. Now for the harder test.
Our Prediction
Spain is the better side — more technical in midfield, more dangerous in attack when Yamal is firing, and with the composure that comes with already being guaranteed a knockout place. Uruguay under Bielsa will make this hard. They always do, and the need to win will bring out the best in this squad.
But Spain has too many ways to hurt a defence that has conceded three goals in two games. Spain is a heavy favourite here and should win this.
