Switzerland ledlead Algeria 1–0 at half-time in their FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 32 match, courtesy of a Breel Embolo goal in the 10th minute. But the scoreline does not tell the full story of this first half. Algeria have been sharp, energetic, and direct — twice denied by an impressive Gregor Kobel — and this fixture is far from settled heading into the second period.

A Fast Start — Both Ways
Algeria nearly opened the scoring themselves. In the 5th minute, Houssem Aouar collected the ball in the centre of the box and drove a right-footed effort. Five minutes later, they were punished on the other end.
Johan Manzambi — Switzerland’s tournament standout so far — burst forward on a fast break and slipped a perfectly timed pass into the path of Breel Embolo. Embolo, arriving at pace, finished from close range. 1–0. The counter-attack was precise, the finish composed. Switzerland had the lead before Algeria could settle.
Kobel: The Difference in the First Half
Algeria refused to be rattled. They came straight back to Switzerlandat Switzerland with real intent. In the 14th minute, Farès Chaïbi played through Aouar, who drove a right-footed shot toward the bottom-left corner — Gregor Kobel got down sharply to his right and pushed it away. A big save. Algeria were not done.
Chaïbi himself tested Kobel again in the 42nd minute, arriving on the ball outside the box and striking low toward the bottom-left corner once more — same outcome. Kobel down, same corner, same result. Two saves that kept Switzerland ahead. Without him, this could easily be 1–1.
Switzerland had their own chance to double the lead. In the 15th minute, Denis Zakaria arrived onto a Remo Freuler pass and drove low — Luca Zidane, Algeria’s goalkeeper, got down to his right to push it away. Switzerland’s lead stayed at one when it could have been two.
Manzambi Injury and Algeria’s Yellow
Two moments broke the flow in the middle section. In the 15th minute, shortly after his assist, Johan Manzambi went down with an injury that delayed the match briefly. He continued — but it is something Switzerland will be monitoring heading into the second half. Lose Manzambi, and they lose their most dangerous creative outlet.
Algeria’s Chaïbi picked up a yellow card in the 35th minute for a foul on Manzambi — a booking that adds another layer of pressure on him in the second period. Zakaria’s header from a Rubén Vargas cross in the 36th minute sailed narrowly high; Ricardo Rodríguez tried his luck from distance in the 24th and missed the target.
Algeria had the last attempt of the half. Deep into stoppage time, Ibrahim Maza — who has been lively throughout — arrived centrally and drove a left-footed shot wide. Switzerland survived. 1–0 at the break, but only just.
What the Second Half Holds
Switzerland hashave the lead and the counter-attacking structure to protect it. Algeria have shown the quality to find an equaliser — Aouar, Maza, and Chaïbi have all been dangerous. The question is whether Kobel can maintain his first-half level for another 45 minutes, and whether Manzambi is fit enough to keep stretching Algeria on the break.
One goal between them. The second half is wide open.
