FIFA World Cup 2026

The result went to Switzerland. The history went to Canada. At a packed BC Place in Vancouver, the co-hosts lost 2-1 to a well-organised Swiss side — but the scoreline was almost beside the point. Canada had already done what no Canadian men’s team had ever done: qualified for the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup. When the full-time whistle blew, the home crowd understood both things at once. Disappointment and pride. Grief and joy. This is what it feels like to be a footballing nation on the rise.

Switzerland Control, Canada Threaten

Switzerland were the more composed side from the outset. In the 11th minute, they came close. Ricardo Rodríguez’s precise through-ball released Breel Embolo in behind the Canadian backline. Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau made a sharp one-on-one save, but the rebound fell to Johan Manzambi. Derek Cornelius threw himself across the goal line to block it. Canada survived, but the warning was written clearly.

The match grew physical as both sides competed intensely for midfield control. In the 32nd minute, Granit Xhaka and Cyle Larin clashed in a heated exchange that earned both players yellow cards and did little to ease the tension. Canada’s best first-half moment came in the 44th minute when Ali Ahmed found space inside the box following a fluid counter-attack — Gregor Kobel dove smartly to his near post to deny him. Zero-zero at the break, and it felt like the match was finely balanced.

Manzambi Changes the Game

Switzerland took the lead 39 seconds into the second half. Canada had barely settled when Manzambi zipped a low cross from the right to the back post, allowing Rubén Vargas to guide it comfortably into the bottom corner. One-nil. The timing was devastating — Canada had no time to find their rhythm before conceding.

The 20-year-old Manzambi then turned from provider to finisher. In the 57th minute, Embolo used his physicality to shield a long ball and lay it off perfectly. Manzambi met it with a low, precise drive that squirmed underneath Crépeau and into the net. Two-nil. The youngster had a goal and an assist within eleven minutes of the second half. A stunning performance from a player who looks entirely at home on the international stage.

Promise David and Canada’s Fightback

Canada refused to go quietly. Two minutes after coming off the bench, substitute Promise David produced the moment of the match for the home support — latching onto a brilliant looping delivery from Nathan Saliba and smashing home a sublime volley. BC Place erupted. One goal back with fourteen minutes left. The siege was on.

Canada threw everything at Switzerland in the closing stages. Alistair Johnston and Derek Cornelius both went agonisingly close. In what would have been the dramatic equaliser, David met a late delivery with a well-directed header — but Kobel got down sharply to push it away. The final whistle came shortly after. Switzerland held on. Two-one.

What This Means — for Both Teams

Switzerland finished top of Group B — a composed, well-drilled team that has given very little away across their three matches. Kobel has been excellent in goal. Manzambi has emerged as one of the tournament’s brightest young talents. They enter the Round of 32 with momentum and the confidence of a side that has yet to be seriously troubled.

For Canada, the significance of this moment cannot be overstated. Jonathan David’s hat-trick against Qatar, the draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the qualification secured — all of it culminates in a Round of 32 appearance on home soil. The loss to Switzerland stings. However, they will be ready to face the Group A runner-up in their first-ever knockout match at a World Cup.
