Match overview

Brazil carry five World Cup titles and permanent expectations into MetLife Stadium — but under circumstances few would have predicted. Carlo Ancelotti, the first non-Brazilian to manage the Seleção at a FIFA World Cup 2026™, took over in 2025 after a qualifying campaign that saw them scrape through in fifth place. Morocco arrive as the team that changed what African football could achieve. The 2022 semi-final run under Regragui was seismic — and even though Regragui is gone, Ouahbi has kept most of what made them so difficult to beat.

Team analysis

Brazil

Ancelotti’s appointment brought prestige back to a squad that was losing its way under Dorival Júnior. The tactical familiarity he has with Vinícius Júnior — both won back-to-back Champions Leagues together at Real Madrid — is one of Brazil’s biggest advantages. Raphinha, Bruno Guimarães, and Gabriel Magalhães form a core of excellent European-based talent. The caveat: Neymar will miss this opener with a calf injury. Ancelotti has said the 34-year-old could return for the later group games, but for now Brazil will go into their toughest opener without him.

Key player: Vinícius Júnior — The Real Madrid forward is the most dangerous attacker in this squad and arguably this tournament. His pace, directness, and ability to score in big moments make him a constant problem for defences. If Morocco give him any space on that left flank, they’ll pay.

Morocco

Walid Regragui’s shock resignation in March 2026 — three months out from the tournament — rattled Morocco’s preparations. Mohamed Ouahbi, who guided the Atlas Cubs to U-20 World Cup glory in 2025, stepped in quickly. He’s kept the core intact: Achraf Hakimi as captain, Noussair Mazraoui at left-back, Sofyan Amrabat and Azzedine Ounahi anchoring midfield, Brahim Diaz providing creativity in behind. The absences are notable — Ziyech and En-Nesyri, two defining players of the 2022 semi-final run, are both out. But what Ouahbi still has is a squad that knows how to defend and hurt teams on the counter.

Key player: Achraf Hakimi — PSG’s captain and one of the best full-backs in the world. His ability to attack the space behind opposition wingers with pace and precision makes him a genuine goal threat — not just a defensive option. Against Brazil’s left side, those overlapping runs will be a constant danger.

Head-to-head record

Three meetings, two wins for Brazil. The Seleção won 2-0 in a 1997 friendly and 3-0 at the 1998 World Cup group stage in France — still the only competitive meeting between these sides. But the most recent encounter shifted the narrative: Morocco won 2-1 in a in a friendly in Tangier in March 2023, goals from En-Nesyri and Ounahi doing the damage. The gap has closed considerably since France 98, and this is Brazil’s first serious test of that.

Tactical preview

Ancelotti’s preferred shape is a 4-2-3-1 — Vinícius on the left, Raphinha right, a number ten linking play behind the striker, with Bruno Guimarães and Casemiro providing midfield cover. Morocco mirrors that structure under Ouahbi: a disciplined 4-2-3-1, compact in shape, dangerous on the break. The wide channels are where this match will be decided. If Hakimi gets forward freely and Vinícius escapes his marker, both sides can create. Morocco’s priority is clear — neutralise Vinícius before he builds momentum, then make Brazil work for every inch of space.

Key storylines

  • Neymar is out for this opener. Ancelotti confirmed the 34-year-old is dealing with a grade two calf tear and won’t be available against Morocco. Brazil have more than enough quality to win without him — but losing the player who creates space for everyone else against a side this organised defensively changes the equation considerably.
  • A coaching change three months before a World Cup is the kind of disruption that unravels squads. Regragui resigned in March 2026 amid controversy following the AFCON final, and Ouahbi — a coach with U-20 World Cup credentials rather than senior tournament experience — was handed the job. The players are familiar with the system. Whether they trust the new voice in the dressing room from day one is something only the pitch will answer.
  • Brahim Diaz steps into the creative void left by Ziyech’s exclusion. The Real Madrid midfielder — who previously represented Spain at youth level before committing to Morocco — now has to be the player who unlocks defences in behind. Against Brazil, that’s an enormous responsibility for a man still building his senior international identity.

Prediction and verdict

Morocco carry the defensive blueprint that made them so hard to beat in 2022, and Ouahbi hasn’t dismantled it. This will be tight. But Brazil have Vinícius Júnior, and Ancelotti — who spent years at Real Madrid watching that man decide European finals — knows better than anyone how to get the best from him. One moment of quality on the left flank, and that’s usually enough.  Brazil is likely to win this contest.
