Folarin Balogun. Right on the stroke of half-time. That is the difference between these two sides at the break. The USA lead Bosnia and Herzegovina 1–0 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Santa Clara — a lead that felt inevitable given the amount of pressure the hosts produced, and yet arrived later than it should have.
A first half that had everything: early chances, a goal-line save, a keeper collision, a disallowed goal, a VAR review, a crossbar-rattler in stoppage time, and more. The USA are in front. Balogun is the story.

A Fast Start — and an Early Bosnian Warning
The USA came out at an intense tempo — rapid passing, aggressive pressing. Bosnia and Herzegovina absorbed it in a compact low block, stayed disciplined, and then reminded everyone of the threat they carry on the counter. Legendary striker Edin Džeko broke free inside the first five minutes and forced Matt Freese into an early save. One pass, one run, one shot. The USA were warned.
Chances, Near Misses, and Freese’s Crucial Save
The middle section of the first half belonged to the USA in terms of territory, but the finishing was not there. Malik Tillman and Folarin Balogun worked a neat one-two to carve through Bosnia’s defence, only for the final ball to run out. Antonee Robinson, who was excellent all half, squared a perfectly placed cross to Balogun — who could not get clean contact and sent it wide.
When Bosnia threatened from a corner, it was Freese who kept the USA level with a massive goal-line save. A reminder that this is still a knockout match and one moment of concentration loss can be enough.
24′ — The Collision That Held Its Breath
In the 24th minute, a heavy aerial challenge between Robinson and Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj in the penalty area brought the game to a halt. Vasilj required extended medical attention on the field before eventually — and impressively — continuing. The referee called a hydration break immediately after. At that point, still 0–0, the game could have gone either way.
VAR Drama and a Disallowed Goal
The second quarter of the half delivered the most eventful stretch of the game. Balogun went down hard inside the box following a heavy sliding challenge — VAR reviewed it, and the on-field decision stood: no penalty. Moments later, Balogun did put the ball in the net, finishing cleanly past Vasilj. The celebration began. The flag went up. A step offside. The goal was ruled out.
45′ — The Goal That Stuck
Right before the whistle, the USA’s pressure finally paid off with a goal that counted. Balogun fought through a crowded penalty box, shook off his marker, and finished cleanly past Vasilj. 1–0. The stadium erupted. The goal had been coming for 40 minutes. Balogun had been the one trying to force it all along.
Immediately after the restart, Tyler Adams took a heavy collision from Džeko but managed to continue after treatment. Then, in the seventh minute of added time, Adams found Sergino Dest, whose header laid it perfectly into Balogun’s path. His flicked effort grazed the very top of the crossbar. Inches from another goal. The USA went into the tunnel leading by one.
What to Expect in the Second Half
Bosnia will need to change something. Their low block held for 44 minutes, but the USA’s volume of pressure was always going to produce a goal. Džeko remains the constant danger — if Bosnia can get the ball to him quickly after winning possession, he has the quality to create problems even against a well-organised USA defensive setup.
For the USA, the task is simple: a second goal would end this contest. Balogun has the confidence and the form to get it. With Robinson providing the width and McKennie controlling the midfield, the platform is there.
Second half. Everything is still to play for. But the USA are in front and playing like a team that intends to stay there.
