Panama came to New Jersey with a plan. Sit deep, stay compact, absorb everything England threw at them, and make the most of whatever few moments might open up. For an hour, it worked. Then Jude Bellingham happened — and after that, Harry Kane wrote his name into the record books. England 2-0 Panama. Group L winners. Into the Round of 32.

Panama Holds Firm in the First Half
The opening seconds gave a false sense of an open match. Tomás Rodríguez tested Jordan Pickford almost immediately with a sharp right-footed effort from outside the box — a moment of early intent from Panama that suggested they had not come simply to defend. But as the half developed, Thomas Christiansen’s side retreated and organised, packing the spaces and denying England any rhythm through the middle.
England had 68% of the ball and almost nothing to show for it. Thomas Tuchel’s side probed and prodded but found no way through a disciplined low block. Wide play stalled at the edge of the box. Central combinations broke down before reaching their targets. Marcus Rashford forced a smart save from goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera — the best moment of the half for England — and then curled a free-kick just wide. Clear-cut chances were rare. At half-time, Panama had earned their 0-0.
There was frustration in the England stands and visible impatience on the touchline. Tuchel’s side had not been bad — but they had not been good enough, and Panama knew it.
Five Minutes That Decided It (62′ & 67′)
Whatever was said at half-time worked. England came back different. Sharper, more direct, less patient with the slow build-up that had clogged the first half.
In the 62nd minute, Bukayo Saka swung in a corner and Bellingham — always alive to movement in the box — peeled off his marker at the near post and poked it home on the volley. The kind of goal only players with that instinct score. England 1-0.
Five minutes later, Bellingham was the provider. He drove down the left, found space, and floated a cross to the far post where Harry Kane had positioned himself perfectly. The captain rose and powered his header into the net. Clean. Decisive. England 2-0 — and the game was done.

Kane Overtakes Lineker
That goal was Harry Kane’s 11th in FIFA World Cup history. It takes him past Gary Lineker — whose nine goals had stood as England’s benchmark since Italy 1990 — and makes Kane the country’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup. Lineker never won the tournament. Kane has not yet either. But the record is his now, earned across three World Cups on three continents against different eras of defenders.
What makes it more remarkable is the consistency. Kane has never been a one-tournament wonder. He won the Golden Boot in Russia in 2018. He delivered again in Qatar. And now, in North America, he is still among the most dangerous strikers at the tournament. At 32, he shows no signs of stopping.
Panama’s Cruel Late Ending
Panama’s night ended with one more twist of the knife. Deep into stoppage time, José Fajardo broke through the England defence and finished cleanly into the top corner. The bench celebrated. The Panama fans in the stadium rose. Then came the VAR check — tight offside, goal ruled out. Panama exited the FIFA World Cup 2026™ group stage without a win, but having pushed England for sixty minutes and given a reminder that Central American football is not merely making up the numbers at this level.
