An hour’s delay. A thunderstorm. Heavy rain. None of it slowed Mexico down. El Tri lead Ecuador 2–0 at half-time in their FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 32 clash at the Estadio Azteca, Mexico City — and it could easily have been more.
Julián Quiñones struck first, Raúl Jiménez doubled it, and 17-year-old Gilberto Mora ran the game from wide. The Azteca is rocking. Ecuador have 45 minutes to save themselves.

The Delay — and the Storm Before the Storm
Lightning protocols pushed kick-off back by a full hour as a severe thunderstorm rolled over Mexico City. When the match finally started, the rain was still falling and the pitch glistening under the floodlights. None of that bothered the home crowd, who turned the Estadio Azteca into a wall of noise from the first whistle.
Mexico came out as if the delay had only built their intensity. Within six minutes, Mora and Jiménez were combining inside the box, sending the first warning to Ecuador’s defence. A minute later, Jiménez met a precise Luis Romo cross with a free header — only to nod it just wide. The early signs were clear.
Mora Lights Up the Azteca
The name on everyone’s lips is Gilberto Mora. The 17-year-old was everywhere in the opening quarter, dribbling with a confidence that belied his age. His 15th-minute run down the left flank ended with a curling effort that shaved the far post. It was a finish that had the crowd on its feet before they realised it had not gone in.
Mora is Mexico’s creative engine tonight — unpredictable, direct, and impossible to pin down. Ecuador have no answer for him yet.
22′ — Quiñones Opens the Scoring
The breakthrough came with a touch of class. Roberto Alvarado threaded a perfectly weighted through-ball into Julián Quiñones’s run, and Quiñones did not hesitate. From the edge of the box, he thundered a strike into the top-left corner that left goalkeeper Hernan Galindez with no chance. 1–0 Mexico. The Azteca erupted.
Ecuador’s Moment — and Why It Did Not Change Things
Ecuador had their best chance in the 27th minute. John Yeboah produced a moment of individual quality — nutmegging César Montes inside the box — before firing towards the near post. The ball struck the upright and flew clear. On another night, that is a goal. Tonight, it summed up Ecuador’s luck.
31′ — Jiménez Makes It Two
Mexico killed the contest with their second before the half hour was out. The combination play was a joy — Jiménez and Quiñones interchanging with precision, the veteran forward eventually arriving at the edge of the penalty area to curl a precise finish into the top-right corner. Quiñones, who had scored the first, provided the assist for the second. 2–0.
Alan Franco’s yellow card for Ecuador in the 45th minute was the frustrated punctuation at the end of a very difficult half for them.
What to Expect in the Second Half
Mexico are in total control. The question for the second half is whether they push for more goals or manage the game — and at the Azteca, with the crowd this loud, the instinct will be to attack. Mora, Quiñones, and Jiménez are all capable of adding to the tally.
Ecuador need two goals to force extra time and a complete reset in their approach. Given how well Mexico have moved the ball, that feels like a very steep hill. But they have the quality in attack to make this interesting if Mexico take their foot off the gas.
Mexico are 45 minutes from the Round of 16.
