The Estadio Azteca has seen Mexico win many times. This one was different. By the time the final whistle sounded on June 25 — Mexico 3-0 Czechia — El Tri had completed the first perfect group stage in their World Cup history. Nine points. Three wins. Zero goals conceded. For a football nation that has produced so much heartbreak at this stage of the tournament over the decades, it felt like something new had arrived. Something to believe in.
Gridlock in the First Half
It did not look like a historic evening for the first 45 minutes. Czechia came in organised and pressed high, disrupting Mexico’s rhythm in the final third and making it difficult for El Tri to play through the lines. Their best moment of the half came through Denis Višinský, who got in position and fired a first-time effort — it went just wide of the post, which was as close as Czechia got.
Mexico, for their part, had their moments of pressure but could not convert them into anything that tested the Czech goalkeeper. Zero-zero at the break, and the scoreline did not flatter either side.

Chávez Opens the Door
Ten minutes into the second half, Luis Romo turned past three defenders at the centre of the pitch — one of those individual moments that open matches — and threaded a pass into the run of Mateo Chávez. The 22-year-old fullback took it in his stride, skipped past Michal Sadílek, and drove a low shot cleanly into the bottom-left corner. His first international goal was the moment the game changed.
Six minutes later, the lead was doubled. Teenager Gilberto Mora slipped a pass through the Czech defensive line to Jorge Sánchez. The Czech goalkeeper got a hand to the initial attempt, but Tomáš Holeš’s attempted clearance unluckily ricocheted off Sánchez and fell invitingly for Julián Quiñones, who had the easiest tap-in of the tournament. Two-nil Mexico. The Azteca began to breathe.
Fidalgo Curls It Home in Stoppage Time
The third goal arrived in the 90th minute. Santiago Giménez drove forward; his run was blocked, but Roberto Alvarado stayed alert and picked up the rebound. With composure, he squared it to substitute Álvaro Fidalgo, and Fidalgo did not miss. He curled the ball beautifully into the top-left corner. Three-nil. The Estadio Azteca roared. Czechia, already beaten, were officially eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The Records That Made This Night Bigger
Two statistics from this match belong in a different category from the goals and the final score.
Gilberto Mora started this match at 17 years and 253 days old, making him the youngest player ever to start a World Cup match for Mexico. Not just in this tournament — in the entire history of El Tri at the World Cup. He set up the second goal.
Guillermo Ochoa was brought on in the 78th minute. At 40 years and 346 days old, the veteran goalkeeper became the oldest North American player ever to feature in a World Cup match — and did so in his sixth consecutive tournament. Six. There are players currently competing who were small children the last time Ochoa was not at a World Cup. The reception he received when he walked onto the pitch told you everything about what this man means to Mexican football.
