Two minutes in, Germany was a goal up at the New Jersey Stadium. It looked inevitable — the natural order reasserting itself. Ninety minutes later, Ecuador had beaten them 2-1. Gonzalo Plata, who had missed an open goal eighteen minutes earlier, smashed the winner into the roof of the net and sent La Tri into the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026™. Germany, despite losing, stays top of Group E on goal difference. But the story of this night was not of Germany’s qualifying but of Ecuador’s dominance on the pitch.
Two Goals in Nine Minutes
Germany struck early. One minute and 49 seconds into the match — the second-fastest World Cup goal in German football history — Aleksandar Pavlović took a throw-in and picked out Florian Wirtz. Wirtz turned and found Leroy Sané on the left flank. Sané struck it first time, left foot, low and hard past Hernán Galíndez. One-nil. Ecuador protested furiously — Pavlović had caught Pedro Vite with a high boot moments earlier — but VAR reviewed the sequence and confirmed the goal stood.
Nine minutes. Ecuador hit back immediately. Pedro Vite won the ball high up the pitch after a German turnover and released Nilson Angulo on the left side. Angulo cut inside, slipped past Pavlović, and from outside the penalty area curled a low shot into the bottom-right corner past the diving Manuel Neuer. Ecuador’s first goal of the entire tournament, and the noise from the stands told you exactly what it meant.

VAR Drama, an Empty Net, and a Moment of Madness
The second half opened with a decision and then a reversal. Referee Tori Penso pointed to the penalty spot — Germany awarded a spot kick. But the VAR review was swift: Sané had committed an intentional foul on Vite in the build-up to the move. Penalty overturned. Germany frustrated. Ecuador relieved.
Germany’s defensive shape had been disrupted by the loss of centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck to injury. In the 72nd minute, it showed in the worst possible way. A communication breakdown between the 40-year-old Neuer and defender Jonathan Tah left the goal completely unguarded. Moisés Caicedo picked out Gonzalo Plata with the net gaping in front of him. Plata — unmarked, yards out — hooked the ball over the crossbar.
The stadium fell into a stunned silence. The kind of miss that can define a tournament. The kind that haunts careers. Plata sank to his knees.
Plata Rewrites the Story
Six minutes later, he erased it all. Ecuador won a corner. The set-piece was worked with precision — substitute Kevin Rodríguez attacked the near post and, with perfect timing, flicked a header across the face of the goal. Plata was already moving. He read the trajectory before Rodríguez had even made contact and was onto the ball before any German defender could react, flicked it into the roof of the net with such precision that there was never any doubt.
Pandemonium. Plata sprinted toward the corner flag. His teammates buried him. On the touchline, Ecuador’s bench went berserk. Two-one.
Germany Throw Everything — Ecuador Hold
In the final minutes, Germany poured forward. Substitute Deniz Undav drove into the left side of the penalty area in stoppage time, muscled past Félix Torres, and got a shot away under pressure. It cracked into the side netting. The noise it made, for a fraction of a second, sounded like a goal. It was not. Ecuador’s defence held the line through four minutes of added time. The whistle came. History confirmed.

Where Both Teams Stand
Germany’s defeat does not remove them from Group E leadership — their superior goal difference keeps them top. They advance to the Round of 32 but will carry questions about their defensive organisation and the absence of Schlotterbeck into the next match.
Ecuador go through as one of the best third-placed teams across all groups. After being denied by the post several times in their two previous matches, this is the result of a talented and organised team having faith in themselves right to the end.
