Japan 1-1 Sweden: Japan’s Masterpiece and Elanga’s Stunner, but Both Nations March On

A draw was enough for both sides. In the end, a draw is what both sides got — but not through any shortage of effort or quality. Japan led, Sweden equalised with something brilliant, and then Zion Suzuki stood between Sweden and a winner in a stoppage time that the Dallas Stadium will not forget quickly. The final whistle at 4:30 AM IST on June 26 was met with celebrations from both dressing rooms. Japan went through as the Group F runners-up with five points. Sweden advances on four points as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament. The Round of 32 awaits both of them.

A Careful First Half With One Moment of Clarity

Both coaches had done their maths going in, and it showed in the first 45 minutes. Japan controlled the ball through their characteristic short passing game — purposeful in possession, patient in approach — while Sweden sat in a compact defensive shape and waited. Clear chances were hard to come by.

Alexander Bernhardsson tested Zion Suzuki early with a speculative effort that the Japanese goalkeeper dealt with comfortably. The best moment of the half came right on half-time: Keito Nakamura cut inside from the right, generated space where there appeared to be none, and hit a low drive from 15 yards that Jacob Widell Zetterström turned around the post with a fine save. The half ended goalless. Both teams also lost their first-choice centre-backs to injury — Kō Itakura for Japan, Isak Hien for Sweden — substitutions that would shape the second half’s tactical dynamic.

Japan Scored a Beauty. Sweden Answer With One of Their Own.

The second half was a different match. Japan raised their tempo, and the game came alive. In the 56th minute, they manufactured the tournament’s most intricate goal of the evening. Ritsu Dōan drifted infield from the right, exchanged a quick one-two with Ayase Ueda, and threaded a precise through ball into the channel. Daizen Maeda, timing his run to perfection to stay onside, stroked the ball calmly past the onrushing Zetterström. One-nil. Japan ahead.

Six minutes. That was how long the lead lasted. Anthony Elanga received the ball from Viktor Gyökeres on the right side of the box and did not need a second invitation. He drove inside, dropped his shoulder, shifted it onto his left foot and bent a shot into the bottom far corner that swerved beautifully past Suzuki. One-one. It was a spectacular one-man effort that levelled up the match.

Suzuki Refuses to Let Sweden Win It

Elanga’s goal gave Sweden the scent of victory, and they pressed for a second. Alexander Isak drove low and hard from outside the box — Suzuki got down quickly and deflected it clear. Sweden continued to push in a frantic final ten minutes, with Graham Potter’s side sensing they could jump above Japan in the table with a win.

Seven minutes of stoppage time. Sweden all-in. Elanga broke clear one-on-one with Suzuki, and the goalkeeper came out rapidly, spreading himself to shut down the angle and force Elanga wide. From the resulting corner, Isak climbed above everyone and sent a bullet header towards the goal. Suzuki flung out his right hand, tipped it onto the crossbar one-handed, and then smothered the rebound on the ground. Three saves in the final minutes. Japan held. The whistle came.
