Morocco came here to upset the Seleção. For 44 minutes, they looked like they might just do it.
The first half of this Group C opener at MetLife Stadium has been electric — and the 1-1 scoreline at the break, though it looks level on paper, does not tell the full story. Morocco were the superior side for long stretches. Brazil had to dig deep to find their equaliser. And they found it in the most Vinícius Júnior way possible.
Morocco start sharp, Brazil look uncertain.
The Atlas Lions set the tempo from the first whistle. Compact in defence, dangerous on the counter — Walid Regragui’s side pressed with energy and moved the ball with purpose. As early as the 6th minute, Achraf Hakimi arrived at pace down the right and unleashed a driven effort from the edge of the area. It curled just wide of Alisson’s post. A warning Brazil failed to heed.
Morocco’s opening goal, when it came, was sublime. In the 20th minute, Ismael Saibari burst through a gap in the Brazilian defensive line and, with remarkable composure, lifted a delicate chip over Alisson Becker. MetLife Stadium erupted in disbelief. Brazil 0, Morocco 1.
Brazil wobbled, then found their footing.
The goal knocked Brazil sideways. For a spell, the five-time champions looked uncertain — misplacing passes, slow to press, unable to find the urgency a deficit demands. Morocco sensed it. Brahim Díaz, roaming freely in the pockets, tried his luck from the centre of the box in the 29th minute. Alisson got down sharply to his left to keep it out. A significant save. Without it, this could have been a very different half-time score.
Gradually, Brazil’s quality began to assert itself. Casemiro brought control to the midfield. The Seleção stopped chasing the game and started playing their game.
Vinícius. Of course it was Vinícius.
The equaliser arrived deep into first-half stoppage time — and it was everything you would expect from the world’s most dangerous forward at his brilliant best.
Bruno Guimarães — excellent throughout — slipped a perfectly weighted ball into the right channel. Vinícius Jr. received it on the run, cut inside onto his right foot, shaped his body, and curled the shot low and hard past Yassine Bounou into the far corner. 1-1. Brazil’s bench rose as one.
It was the kind of goal that reminds you exactly why Vinícius is so difficult to contain. One moment of stillness, one explosive decision, one bent ball into the corner. Morocco had worked so hard to build its lead. They went into the interval with nothing to show for it.
What to watch in the second half
Morocco will need to reset. The question for Regragui is whether his side can recapture the intensity of the opening 20 minutes — or whether conceding so late in the half has disrupted their rhythm.
For Brazil, the challenge is the opposite: can they build on the momentum of that equaliser, or will Morocco’s defensive structure absorb the pressure and take the game to extra time?
One thing is certain — Group C has arrived in style. The second half is 45 minutes away, and Indian fans watching at 3:30 AM IST should already know: this is worth staying up for.
