Keshav and Jaya’s connection is built upon trust and love but will it all collapse under the burden of a toilet?

Every year Bollywood gifts the audience a film that celebrates the purpose of media. It has a stellar star cast who is not just all about glam but more about acting, it also has a storyline that goes beyond our imagination, but most importantly the film gives a strong message. One that needs to be talked about. And one such film is Akshay Kumar’s Toilet – Ek Prem Katha. While the title gives off a weird vibe, the story is a romantic tale that whacks the social stereotypes! Toilet -Ek Prem Katha is the story of a higher caste Brahmin Keshav (Akshay Kumar) falling in love with a highly educated and modern Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar). Jaya and Keshav love each other but is love enough for a relationship to last an entire lifetime? No! But the Toilet is!

Jaya and Keshav’s love story is a satire on the Indian society. It is based in a small village near Gorakhpur, UP. Keshav runs a small bicycle business while Jaya is the board topper! It is an unusual match as Keshav is quite a bit older than Jaya as well. Keshav fights for his love and eventually marries Jaya. But she soon leaves him. And why? Because his house does not have a toilet! Keshav tries to lure Jaya and asks her to adjust like the other ladies of the village but Jaya simply refuses to bow down.

Finally, Jaya returns home and Keshav realises his mistake. He builds a Toilet for his wife against the wishes of his traditional and orthodox father. His father believes that having a Toilet inside the house compound can lead to diseases and is against the religious sacred teachings. But he fails to understand that having a toilet means having standard hygiene conditions!

The film is a romantic comedy and very relatable. Women have fought this social stigma and have started asking for their right to having a Toilet in the village. Women have had to fight for their positions since time immemorial. Be it the right to vote, get an education, or to wear what they please, women have always had to bow down. But Jaya’s undying spirit has provoked a revolution and now women in villages are not budging on their demands. This was the need of the hour. Now three years down since the film released, many villagers have the privilege of having their own toilets!

There are many dialogues that have left a lasting impact on the audience but our favourite from the film is ‘If you change Nothing, Nothing will change!’ Don’t you agree with this? Watch the film to enjoy a fun yet serious love story!
