#ThrowbackThursday: Reminiscing superstar Mammootty’s incredible performance as a comic-don in Madhura Raja
Remember when Mammootty reprised the role of Raja with utmost grace and a neverending dose of humour?
Apart from the gripping storylines and well-shot films, the Malayalam film industry is well known for the superstars of the industry. Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, and others have ruled the industry for as long as we can remember. While most actors would stick to just one genre, Mammootty has shown his versatility in various kinds of roles. One such role was that of Raja from the film Madhura Raja, a rowdy who is considered a king by his followers.
Check out Mammootty’s mindblowing performance in Madhura Raja:
Madhura Raja, directed by Vysakh and written by Udaykrishna, focuses on the life of Raja, also known as Madhura Raja, a don from Madhurai who comes to Kochi in order to help his father, Madhavan Nair. The film stars Mammootty, Jai, Anusree, and Jagapathi Babu in the lead roles alongside Siddique, Vijayaraghavan, and Nedumudi Venu in supporting roles.
The story of Madhura Raja starts in a small island village which is ruled by V. R. Nadeshan (Jagapathi Babu), a liquor baron. He runs an illegal liquor racket along with many other illegal schemes. He has gained the trust of many villagers, sweet-talking them into believing everything he says. Anyone who dares to speak against him has only faced dire consequences. When things get out of hand, Madhavan Nair calls reinforcements in the form of Raja.

Mammootty aces his role as Raja. Looking at his funny talks and down-to-earth behaviour, it’s hard to believe that he’s an actual don. Although Raja has a powerful hand all around the nation, the man is shown having no such ego surrounding this fact. In fact, most of the time he’s seen trying to deal with situations, as humbly and with as much patience as possible. But when things get out of hand, he isn’t afraid to take out the big guns as well. Even at the age of 69, Mammootty doesn’t fall short in any action sequences either.
The film also includes a sizzling item number featuring Sunny Leone, which proves to be a great plot twist as well. Apart from Mammootty, Jai and Anusree also gave exceptional performances. In fact, Jagapathi Babu’s Nadeshan could be easily termed as one of the vilest villains in Malayalam films. The film is definitely a must-watch for anyone who loves a good comedy-drama combined with the right amount of action.
