Everyone has stories and memories related to this film. From evergreen music to acting talent, this film has so many reasons that make it a must-watch. The primary reason for this film being called a classic is the ensemble cast consisting of the country’s finest actors. Raj Babbar, Om Puri, Gurdas Maan, Harpreet Deol, Nina Tiwana, Nirmal Rishi, Sardar Sohi, and comic legend Mehar Mittal all were a part this film, gave their golden inputs, and made the whole affair extremely entertaining.

2. Powerful performances

If you have such talent, what else can you expect? All the cast members, especially the primary cast of Babbar, Harpreet Deol, Puri, Maan and Nina Tiwana, put up a great show. Babbar plays Raja, a boy who returns from Canada after 15 years. Maan plays the jogi Channa, a guy who has lost his love and stays away from all the chaos of a normal life. Puri plays a lecherous guy, Dittu, who has his eye on Preeto (Harpreet Deol), the housemaid of Sardarni Sarup Kaur (Nina Tiwana). These great characters, brought to life by the actors’ performances, made this film a cult classic.

You want to know about the music of this film, just ask your parents if they have heard the song Challa (and not the one from the 2012 film Jab Tak Hai Jaan). Challa is still played on Punjabi radio. It is considered one of the best songs to come out of the industry, especially for those who are living with the pain of losing someone dear. The film’s title song became the folk song of every Punjabi wedding. Even though the term ‘Long Da Lishkara‘ had cultural value before, it became more famous after the film’s release.

4. A story way ahead of its time

When Raja returns to his home, he falls in love with the housemaid Preeto. On one side, he has to face her mother’s disapproval of their relationship. On the other side, Preeto has to kept protected from Dittu, who has an eye on her. Raja’s mother Sarup Kaur has a secret which keeps haunting her and she doesn’t want her kid to go through something that she has faced. Raja wants to bridge the gap between rich and poor, but his path is not easy. His struggle makes the film seem way ahead of its time.

5. Gripping screenplay

Another factor that plays in favour of the film is the gripping and unpredictable screenplay. Preeto and Raja love each other and Sarup is against them, but why? Preeto’s masi Gulabo (Nirmal Rishi) supports their love, but why? Gulabo is another character that has hidden layers and you can’t guess her intention before the climax. Preeto develops a deep connection with Raja, but later she decides to end their relationship…why so? The story is woven in such a way that it gives keeps you interested.
