A movie that brings forth a variety of ways people suffer due to deterioration of mental health, Anjaana Anjaani provides a simple manner to show issues faced by today’s generation. While both Priyanka Chopra‘s character Kiara and Ranbir Kapoor‘s Akash possess suicidal tendencies, the reason for both is different. The coping mechanism is also varied, but with a similar end result. However, they manage to fight their inner demons, move on, and hope for a better future.

A widowed woman played by Parvathy, who’s mourning the death of her husband is encouraged to settle down again, and start a new life with another man. Although Jaya puts up a nonchalant front among her friends and family, she’s still finding it difficult to come to terms with her late husband’s death and the consequent changes. While this isn’t a serious mental condition, if left alone or neglected, it could turn into a life-altering issue.

The movie revolves around Bobby and Keshav, played by Kangana Ranaut and Rajkumar Rao respectively. Both of them display the effects of a serious mental disorder, the former more than the latter. Bobby has been diagnosed and given treatments as well while being kept at a mental asylum. On the other hand, we get to know about Keshav’s issue at the end, showing why awareness of mental health problems is necessary. While Bobby’s condition was clear, Keshav was able to keep it hidden for most of his life, which shows how difficult it is to realize who is a victim of such problems.

A college romance hidden from traditional parents and an arranged marriage in the name of dignity of the family, these are elements frequently found in a Bollywood movie. But Akaash Vani magnifies an issue previously left unsaid, rape in marriage. It also clearly shows the difference in a person’s nature, attitude, and mental health when they’re the recipient of such behavior. Although Vani was able to fight through them and slowly return to her original self, many don’t find a way to be better unless helped by people who understand them.

Old folklore of unrequited love, Laila Majnu is a timeless tale of two lovers who die before uniting with each other. However, this movie has directed a similar story acting out in today’s time. It shows Majnu who’s heartbroken but heals himself by dedicating his life to Sufism. Laila, who suffers mentally while being in an unhappy marriage, who also gives up her life after realizing that she might not get the happy ending she desired. A battle of the mind and soul, the movie is an elegant representation of the value of mental health.
