First Half: Senegal’s Statement
Nobody wrote the first half in France’s favour. Senegal came into this match as underdogs and played as though nobody had told them. The Lions of Teranga matched France’s physicality in midfield, disrupted the French passing game, and carried the greater attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes.
The moment that will stay with Ismaïla Sarr for a long time came right before the break. An open goal. A clear sight. The kind of chance that a player of his calibre converts. Somehow he could not. The half ended goalless; Senegal had been the better side, and Didier Deschamps would have had strong words in the dressing room.
For Indian viewers who had stayed up through the early morning to watch the tournament’s most anticipated Group I fixture, the halftime scoreline was not what anyone had expected.
Mbappé’s Moment
France emerged from halftime transformed. Sharper, more urgent, with a directness that Senegal struggled to cope with in the opening exchanges of the second period. The breakthrough arrived on the 66th minute, and it came, of course, from Kylian Mbappé.
He received the ball on the edge of the Senegal penalty area, created space with a subtle change of direction, and drove a right-footed effort into the corner. Mendy did not move. The celebrations that followed were charged with meaning: the goal drew Mbappé level with Olivier Giroud as France’s joint all-time top scorer. He wheeled away with the composed celebration of a man who knew the night was not yet finished.
Barcola’s Chip
If Mbappé’s goal was driven by hunger, Bradley Barcola’s was delivered with audacity. The substitute had barely touched the ball when he collected a through pass behind the Senegalese defence, assessed his options in a fraction of a second, and delicately chipped the ball over the onrushing Mendy. 2–0. France. The stadium erupted.
It was the kind of goal that only truly confident players attempt. Mendy, one of the great goalkeepers of his generation, was helpless. Barcola, making an immediate impact off the bench, had just given France a two-goal cushion with 8 minutes of normal time remaining.
Late Drama: Mbaye, Then Mbappé
Senegal were not finished. In the 94th minute, 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back with the kind of goal that makes fans sit forward. Iliman Ndiaye slid a pass wide to pick out Mbaye’s late run on the right flank. The teenager drove forward against a tiring French backline, ripped a powerful shot toward goal — and Mike Maignan, who got his hands to it, could not keep it out. The sheer force of the strike deflected the ball over the line. 2–1.
And then, seconds later, Mbappé settled everything. Deep in stoppage time, he received the ball from Olise, drove forward, and from 30 yards out hit a shot of extraordinary power and precision that flew past Mendy. 3–1. France.
It was Mbappé’s 58th international goal — making him France’s outright all-time top scorer, stepping ahead of Giroud in the record books. It was also the 50th goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, and arguably the most emphatic. The captain had delivered when his team needed it most.
What This Means
France top Group I on three points after matchday one. Their next fixture is against Iraq on June 22 IST. Senegal, despite the defeat, are not eliminated — their match against Norway will be crucial, and a win there keeps their qualification hopes alive. But Sarr’s missed open goal in the 45th minute will haunt Aliou Cissé’s preparation for that game.
For the tournament, Mbappé’s record-breaking night changes the conversation. He is now the greatest goalscorer in French football history, at a FIFA World Cup 2026™ that his team are increasingly looking like a serious contender.
