Group H | Houston Stadium| Jun 27, 2026
Match Overview
Neither Cape Verde nor Saudi Arabia is done. Running alongside Uruguay vs Spain, this match helps decide who joins Spain from Group H. Win here and the winner goes through — provided Uruguay don’t beat Spain. If both matches draw, goals scored are the tiebreaker: Cape Verde and Uruguay are level on points and goal difference, but Uruguay lead by one goal scored.

Cape Verde — Team Analysis
Two games, two draws — and Cape Verde are still alive at their maiden World Cup. They held Spain to 0-0 in their opener, one of the results of the group stage. Against Uruguay, they trailed early, fought back through Pina, fell behind again, and equalised in the 61st minute to make it 2-2. Twice tested, twice they found a way back.
Bubista has built a disciplined, compact side that leaves little space. Jovane Cabral (Estrela da Amadora) is their most dangerous attacker — direct, quick, and capable of running in behind. Garry Rodrigues offers width and pace on the opposite flank. Cape Verde’s ability to hurt teams on the counter has been its signature throughout the tournament.
Key Player: Jovane Cabral — Cape Verde’s most dangerous attacker and their biggest source of creativity in the final third. His directness against Spain caused problems, and he’s the player Saudi Arabia needs most to contain tonight.
Saudi Arabia — Team Analysis
One point from two games and a must-win tonight. Saudi Arabia’s World Cup has been uneven. The 4-0 defeat to Spain was heavy — three goals conceded before half-time, with the game over early. The 1-1 draw with Uruguay offered a more accurate picture: Abdulelah Alamri’s 41st-minute goal showed this squad can score and compete. That’s the version Georgios Donis needs tonight.
At 34 and at his third World Cup, Salem Al-Dawsari (Al-Hilal) remains Saudi Arabia’s main creative force — capable of unlocking defences with a pass or a diagonal run. Saud Abdulhamid (Lens) provides the attacking outlet from right back. With most of the players from domestic clubs, this is a tight, well-drilled group. The question is whether that’s enough.
Key Player: Salem Al-Dawsari — The 34-year-old captain at his third World Cup and still Saudi Arabia’s most important creative player. He scored the famous winner against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. A performance of that kind, tonight, is exactly what Donis needs from him.
Head-to-Head
This is the first World Cup meeting between these two nations. Cape Verde showed they can hold world-class opposition to a blank; Saudi Arabia showed they can score against South American sides. Neither has the comfort of a previous WC encounter to draw from.
Tactical Preview
Cape Verde defends deep and compact and looks to counter at speed. Bubista’s system prioritises shape over possession — let the opposition have the ball, invite the mistake. When they win it back, Cabral and Rodrigues push forward quickly. Against a Saudi Arabia side that needs to attack and chase the game, this approach could work perfectly.
Saudi Arabia under Donis builds through midfield and relies on Al-Dawsari’s creativity on the left to find space between the lines. Their domestically based squad is well organised in a 4-2-3-1. The problem is structural: needing a win means they’ll be more open than they’d like — and Cape Verde are built to exploit exactly that.
Key Storylines
A nation of 500,000 people. Their first-ever World Cup. Cape Verde qualified by finishing above Cameroon in African qualifying, an eight-time World Cup nation. They held Spain, came back twice against Uruguay, and are now 90 minutes from the knockout round. Whatever happens tonight, this is already a story worth telling.
A win is the only result that works for Saudi Arabia. Draw or defeat means going home fourth. After the Spain thrashing, Donis has had to rebuild belief in camp. Salem Al-Dawsari scored the famous winner against Argentina at Qatar 2022 — that’s the level of performance needed from him tonight.
The Goals Scored Gamble
If both Group H matches draw, the goals scored decide who goes through between Cape Verde and Uruguay. Uruguay lead by one — three to Cape Verde’s two. A draw here, however tense, may not be enough for Cape Verde. They need goals in this match, not just a point. The scoreline matters as much as the result.
Our Prediction
Cape Verde has been a very impressive team in Group H — compact, resilient, and well-organised without the ball. Saudi Arabia is under pressure and still recovering in confidence after conceding four to Spain. Donis needs the right balance between attack and structure. The Blue Sharks have shown they can punish teams that overcommit. This will be a highly contested match, but at this point, Cape Verde is slightly ahead.
