Group G | Seattle Stadium | Jun 27, 2026 | 8:30 AM IST

Match Overview

Egypt needs only a draw to guarantee automatic qualification. Even a loss should not eliminate them — four points and a strong goal difference make progression as the best third-placed team likely. Iran needs more. A win secures a top-two finish automatically. A draw ties them level with Belgium on three points — if Belgium also draw — with goal difference and goals scored as the decider. A loss, and they go home.

Egypt — Team Analysis

Egypt have been the best side in Group G. They took the lead against Belgium through Ashour’s brilliant 20-yard strike before Lukaku equalised off the bench to make it 1-1. Then came the 3-1 win over New Zealand — Egypt’s first win in this tournament — with goals from Mostafa Zico, Mohamed Salah, and Trezeguet. Hossam Hassan’s side arrived as dark horses and have delivered.

Salah (Liverpool) turned 34 on June 15 — the same day Egypt played Belgium — and scored his first-ever World Cup goal against New Zealand six days later. Omar Marmoush (Manchester City) provides a direct, energetic outlet alongside him, and Trezeguet (Al Ahly) offers late runs from deep. This is a balanced side with match-winners throughout.

Key Player: Mohamed Salah — Egypt’s captain and talisman, now a World Cup goalscorer. This is almost certainly his only World Cup. He is Egypt’s most dangerous player and the one Iran’s defence most needs to contain tonight.

Iran — Team Analysis

Two games, two draws — but Iran have shown more than the results suggest. They came from 2-0 down against New Zealand to salvage a 2-2, with Rezaeian and Mohebbi both scoring. Against Belgium, they absorbed pressure, maintained their shape when Ngoy was dismissed, and escaped with a 0-0 draw. Amir Ghalenoei has built a resilient unit. Now he needs them to be more than just resilient.

Key Player: Mehdi Taremi — Iran’s captain and their most important attacking player. He leads the attack with 103 caps and 58 international goals — Iran’s most dangerous striker by a distance, especially after Sardar Azmoun’s omission.

Head-to-Head

Egypt and Iran have a limited history together in the World Cup. What defines this match is current form rather than past encounters. Egypt arrive on the back of their first win in this tournament; Iran arrive needing a result they haven’t yet produced in Group G.

Tactical Preview

Iran under Ghalenoei defends in a compact mid-block and looks to transition quickly through Taremi’s movement. They’ll try to absorb Egypt’s possession and hit on the counter. Against New Zealand, they showed they can score from behind; against Belgium, they showed defensive discipline. Tonight, they need both qualities at the right moments.

Egypt are comfortable in possession and dangerous at set pieces. Salah drifts into central areas and drives forward; Marmoush provides directness and high-energy pressing from wide. Hassan won’t take unnecessary risks — a draw qualifies them comfortably — but Egypt are too good to simply sit back and invite Iranian pressure for 90 minutes.

Key Storylines

  • Mohamed Salah has won Premier League titles, a Champions League, and an Africa Cup of Nations. His first World Cup had one gap: a goal. He scored against New Zealand in the 67th minute of a historic 3-1 win. This tournament is already writing itself around him.
  • If Iran draws here and Belgium draws with New Zealand, both sides finish on three points and equal goal difference. Goals scored then decide the tiebreaker. Iran has scored two in this group; Belgium just one. Iran currently holds the edge. Every goal scored in Seattle tonight shapes the group standings as much as the result in Vancouver.

Our Prediction

Egypt are the more complete team and won’t take unnecessary risks. They’ll keep Salah involved and make Iran work for everything. Iran needs to win but has converted few chances across two draws, and Egypt are a considerably tougher defensive proposition than either of their previous opponents.

Egypt have the quality to control this and find a goal when it matters.
