Day 5 of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ will be remembered above all for what did not happen: Spain did not score. Four matches, four draws. Two Groups — G and H — left completely level after the opening round of fixtures. The tournament’s second week has been turned entirely on its head.
Spain had 27 shots. Belgium needed just 22 seconds from Romelu Lukaku’s introduction to level. New Zealand’s Elijah Just scored twice. Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper Mohammad Al Owais made the saves of the night. Zero wins for the favourites. Five days in, and this FIFA World Cup 2026™ is refusing to follow any script.
Spain 0–0 Cape Verde | Group H
European champions Spain arrived expecting to win. Cape Verde, making their first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, arrived expecting to survive. Goalkeeper Josimar Évora Dias — known as Vozinha — had other ideas entirely.
Spain’s 27 attempts produced seven on target. Vozinha saved all seven. Oyarzabal was denied twice in the first half. Laporte’s header was pushed away. Ferran Torres, Spain’s clearest opportunity, rattled the crossbar. In the 88th minute, Pico Lopes threw himself across the goal line to block another Oyarzabal volley. Deep into stoppage time, Pedri received a yellow card for a tactical foul.
Cape Verde became just the seventh team in World Cup history to avoid defeat on their tournament debut.
Belgium 1–1 Egypt | Group G
Egypt scored first. Emam Ashour finished calmly in the 20th minute, giving the Pharaohs a lead they protected well through a first half in which Belgium never found their rhythm. Belgium’s technical quality was visible in bursts — but Egypt’s defensive shape was disciplined and well-organised.
The equaliser arrived at the 66th minute. Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net under pressure from the attack Lukaku instantly sparked. One moment of presence. One own goal. Belgium levelled but could not find a winner.
Both teams leave Seattle with a point.
Saudi Arabia 1–1 Uruguay | Group H
Saudi Arabia took the lead through Abdulelah Al-Amri, who reacted sharply inside the box to give the Green Falcons a half-time advantage. It was a deserved lead, built on defensive organisation and dangerous transitions that troubled Uruguay throughout the first hour.
Uruguay’s equaliser came from Maximiliano Araújo late in the match — a composed finish that rescued a point Marcelo Bielsa’s side will have felt they deserved given their quality on the ball. Goalkeeper Mohammad Al Owais was outstanding for Saudi Arabia, making a series of stops that kept them level before the late drama. A point each in Miami.
Group H — Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Cape Verde — is now perfectly level on one point each after matchday one.
Iran 2–2 New Zealand | Group G
The day’s final fixture produced its most dramatic football. Elijah Just put New Zealand ahead inside seven minutes — a sharp, composed finish that gave the All Whites immediate belief. Iran responded through Ramin Rezaeian on 32 minutes, reacting fastest to a blocked shot to level.
Just struck again nine minutes into the second half, his brace restoring New Zealand’s advantage and threatening a historic result. Then Mohammad Mohebbi arrived with the answer: heading in Rezaeian’s precise cross on the 64th minute to make it 2–2, and the match finished level. Iran frustrated not to have won. New Zealand — in their first FIFA World Cup 2026™ match — walked away with a point they had earned entirely on merit.
Group G: Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand — all with 1 point similar to Group H. Both groups go into matchday two with everything still to play for.
