The Match Preview
Eight goals from Mbappé in five matches, sixteen for France in total. On the other side, Spain has conceded exactly once in the knockout stage and kept opponents chasing shadows with a possession game built around Rodri, Pedri and Olmo. This is the match the draw promised from the first day.
Spain beat France 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-final and 5-4 in a staggering Nations League semi last year. France won the Nations League Final in 2021 and beat Spain 3-1 in the previous World Cup meeting, in 2006. Six of the last ten go to La Roja. No side arrives with a genuine psychological edge — they simply know each other too well for that.
Rodri and the possession battle: Spain’s structure is built around Rodri at the base of the midfield — he controls the tempo, recycles possession, and covers transitions, while Porro pushes high on the right. France doesn’t press with intensity; Deschamps prefers a mid-block and looks to win the ball in compact spaces. Spain will have the ball for long stretches, which is exactly what they want. The question is whether France can absorb it and hit cleanly when they transition. Mbappé has built this entire tournament around exactly that scenario.
Yamal vs Digne — the right-side threat: Lamine Yamal hasn’t fully reproduced his Euro 2024 form, but he’s been dangerous in flashes, and Spain find him regularly on the right in isolated situations. Digne is an attacking fullback by instinct — he wants to push forward, and Yamal thrives when the fullback overcommits. If Digne goes high and Yamal receives facing goal, France’s backline has to cover fast. Saliba and Upamecano are experienced enough to manage it, but Yamal at 19 with a World Cup semi-final to win is a variable nobody fully accounts for until it’s too late.
France’s attacking weight is extraordinary. Mbappé’s eight goals, Dembélé’s five, Doué’s intelligent movement, and Olise pulling strings behind — no team in this tournament has consistently threatened opponents from every angle the way France do. Spain are the toughest defensive unit France have faced at this FIFA World Cup 2026™. If Olise finds pockets between Spain’s lines, and Mbappé gets even one clean moment on the counter, the instincts are there to make it count.
