FIFA World Cup 2026™ | Portugal 2–1 Croatia | Ramos Breaks Croatian Hearts Deep in Injury Time at BMO Field

Portugal vs Croatia |
FIFA World Cup 2026

Football does not get much more dramatic than this. Portugal survived a second half in which Croatia outplayed them, Ronaldo was substituted off, and three Croatian goals were disallowed — the last in the 90th minute of stoppage time. In the end, it was Gonçalo Ramos who settled it, powering home a Rafael Leão cross in the fourth minute of added time to send Portugal through 2–1 in a match that had no right to be this chaotic.

BMO Field in Toronto had expected a chess match. They got something far messier, far more extraordinary, and ultimately far more memorable.

First Half: Portugal Edge a Tight Opening

Portugal were ahead in the first 45 minutes in terms of possession and pressure, but Croatia were organised and hard to break down. Livaković was sharp — his double save from Bruno Fernandes in the 4th minute the standout moment of the half. Ronaldo had a header drift wide, a free-kick blocked by the wall. Portugal created, Croatia absorbed. The only booking of the half came in the 17th minute — Rúben Dias clattering into a Croatian attacker. A yellow card that would hang over him for the remainder of the match.

At the break: 0–0. Portugal the better side on paper. Croatia perfectly happy with that.

Second Half: Croatia Take Control — and Take the Lead

Croatia came out transformed after the interval. Ante Budimir made way for Igor Matanović at half-time — more movement, more directness — and Croatia immediately pressed higher. In the 53rd minute, Ivan Perišić drove forward, collected the ball in space, and fired a crisp, low drive past Diogo Costa. 1–0 to Croatia.

Croatia smelled blood. Three minutes later, Nikola Vlašić slid in a finish — but the assistant referee’s flag was already up. Offside. The celebrations died before they began.

Then came one of the most controversial sequences of this FIFA World Cup 2026™. In the 60th minute, Ronaldo — who had been peripheral all evening — found space and slotted home a clever finish. VAR reviewed. A shoulder. Offside by millimetres. No goal. Ronaldo stood with his hands on his head. Portugal were still behind.

Martínez Rolls the Dice — and Gets a Penalty

Roberto Martínez responded immediately. A triple substitution in the 62nd minute: Bernardo Silva, Francisco Conceição, and Gonçalo Ramos on for Vitinha, Pedro Neto, and João Cancelo. The message was clear. Portugal needed goals. Three fresh legs were going in to find them.

Two minutes later, Portugal had their moment. During a set-piece, Nikola Vlašić pulled down Renato Veiga in the box. The referee pointed to the spot after a lengthy VAR check. Ronaldo stepped up. He smashed it straight down the middle. 1–1. The equaliser. The captain’s moment. 68 minutes played.

Croatia found another disallowed goal in the 80th minute — Petar Sučić rounded the defence and scored, launching into a celebration, before the flag went up for offside. Croatia could not believe it. Three goals. Two flags. Luka Modrić, already booked in the 59th minute, could only look at the turf.

Ronaldo Off — and Then the Chaos

What happened next was the most-discussed moment of the match. In the 81st minute, Martínez substituted Ronaldo. The captain walked off the pitch visibly unhappy — jaw set, eyes distant, the walk of a man who disagreed entirely with the decision. The crowd at BMO Field did not know whether to applaud or hold their breath. Rúben Neves came on in his place.

Portugal, without Ronaldo, needed to hold on for nine minutes. They almost did not manage it. Croatia pressed, forced corners, and put bodies into the box. Then, in the fourth minute of added time, Rafael Leão received the ball on the left, drove to the byline, and delivered. Gonçalo Ramos — the substitute, the man Martínez had sent on to make exactly this kind of impact — met the cross with a powerful header. 2–1. Portugal. Ramos turned and ran. The Portuguese bench erupted.

Croatia were not done. Eleven minutes into stoppage time, Joško Gvardiol bundled the ball into the net. Wild celebrations. VAR review. And then — silence. Mario Pašalić had been offside in the build-up. The goal was chalked off. Portugal’s lead stood. The whistle followed shortly after.

The Aftermath

Croatia dominated the second half and had nothing to show for it. Three disallowed goals, a penalty conceded, and an injury-time header from a substitute. It is a brutal way to exit a World Cup.

For Portugal, this was not their best performance. They were second-best for large stretches. But they are through. Ramos is the hero. And somewhere, Ronaldo is watching the replay of that disallowed goal.
