Dashakriya: Exploitation in the Name of Moksha
Dashakriya is a 2017 Marathi movie infused with a lot of drama and entertainment, uplifting the message about the commercialization of the last rites and how kids get involved in this horrifying background to escape poverty.
Set in a village of Maharashtra, Dashakriya pictures the evils interrelated with the last rites of a person in the name of god and attaining Moksha.
This movie, directed by Sandeep Bhalachandra Patil and produced by Kalpana Vikas Kothari, beautifully pulls up the dreadful side of Indian society, greed, and the wrong human mentality.

The cast of Dashakriya features Manoj Joshi as Keshav Bhat, Dilip Prabhavalkar as Patre Savkar, Aditi Deshpande as Shanta, Aarya Adhav as Bhanya, Kishore Chougule as Piraji, Milind Pathak as Narayan, Uma Sardeshmukh as Savkarin Bai and many other eminent supporting cast members.
Dashakriya Plot
The movie starts in the town of Paithan, which many Hindu families visit to perform the last rites for their deceased family members.
The story builds up around the Krivant who are a part of the Brahmin community and are responsible for performing the last rites. They are looked down upon by the other Brahmins for making it a business and playing with the sentiments of the family members of the deceased. The main concern of the movie is how kids from the Krivant family also get into this ugly business due to extreme poverty and lack of food.
The drama film focuses on the attitude and behavior of the people performing the previous rituals, the priest is seen to be concerned only about his 'Dakshina' instead of the family's emotions and wishes, and a boy is shown searching for coins in the ashes to make a living.
The movie also shows a part of society where families struggle to meet their needs and only have exploitation as a source of escape. In contrast, the film also presents the concept that nothing is sacred anymore, exploitation has found its roots in every sphere, and there's no escape from it.
Keshav Bhatt who is one of the lead characters is portrayed in a very negative way, behaving roughly with the Krivants which makes the story more realistic giving a perfect picture of life in the lower levels.
