Norway’s evening nearly unravelled before it had begun. In the 12th minute, Julian Ryerson pulled up with an injury and had to be withdrawn immediately. On came Marcus Holmgren Pedersen — a substitute forced into action far earlier than anyone had anticipated.
Thirty-one minutes later, Pedersen wrote himself into this match’s story. A catastrophic misjudgement from Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly gifted him the ball in a dangerous area. Pedersen needed no second invitation, lashing a venomous strike past Édouard Mendy and into the net. Norway 1-0. A substitute had opened the scoring. Football, as always, had found its own way of being strange.
Norway were nursing their lead deep into four minutes of added time when the Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy gifted them a chance they had no right to waste. A heavy touch allowed a hard-pressing Haaland to steal possession right off his toes. With Mendy stranded away from his line, the net was open — but the angle was cruel. Haaland leaned in and rolled his shot toward goal, only to watch it rattle off the right post. The ball rebounded straight back into the danger zone. A second chance. Haaland positioned himself for an instant follow-up header, but under pressure could not find the target. Frustrated, he collapsed to the pitch, slamming the grass with both hands.

Three Goals in Ten Minutes — the Match Explodes
The second half arrived, and the match detonated. Three minutes in, Martin Ødegaard produced the pass of the night — inch-perfect, splitting the Senegalese defence with surgical precision. Haaland timed his run immaculately, arrived at full pace, and slammed the ball into the roof of the net. Norway 2-0. The game looked done.
Senegal refused to read the script. Within five minutes, Sadio Mané produced a clever flick on the edge of the box to release Ismaïla Sarr, who kept his composure and poked it past Ørjan Nyland. 2-1. Suddenly, a contest again.

Chaos, Injury, and Sarr’s Late Defiance
Senegal threw everything at Norway in the closing stages. In the 63rd minute, Mendy went down following a collision and could not continue — Mory Diaw came on between the posts. The disruption only seemed to galvanise the African side. They pressed. They probed. Norway defended heroically.
In the third minute of added time, they found a way through. Nicolas Jackson picked out Ismaïla Sarr in the box, and the winger, calm as you like, scored his second of the night to make it 3-2. The final whistle could not come quickly enough for Norway. It came. They held on. Just.

Group I Standings and the Road Ahead
Norway are through to the Round of 32, joining France at the top of Group I. Senegal must now regroup and reflect — they showed enough quality to trouble anyone on their day, but goals conceded in moments of defensive uncertainty have cost them dearly. For Erling Haaland, the tournament is building to something. His goals here were his most important yet. More of the same, and Norway will be very difficult to stop.
