From Athletic Bilbao to the World Stage
De la Fuente was a professional footballer before he became a coach, spending the majority of his playing career as a left-back at Athletic Bilbao across two separate spells between 1981 and 1993. He made 254 appearances in La Liga, won two league titles with the club, and was part of the Athletic side that completed a historic league and cup double in 1984 — one of the most celebrated domestic seasons in Spanish football history.
