The Battles That Will Decide This Match
Cody Gakpo vs Achraf Hakimi — The game’s standout individual duel. Gakpo operates from the left, which puts him directly against Hakimi at right back — one of the best attacking full-backs in world football. Hakimi wants to be high and forward; Gakpo wants the space behind him when he is. Both are quick, both are dangerous, and both will spend the full 90 minutes on the front foot. Hakimi’s defensive discipline when tracking back has been tested in these group games. Gakpo’s group stage form — composed, direct, always finding the right movement — makes him the one player who can consistently punish any lapse. If Hakimi pushes up and Morocco lose the ball, Gakpo in behind on the left is the most dangerous transition the Netherlands bring to this match.
Tijjani Reijnders vs Azzedine Ounahi — Reijnders is the Netherlands’ most dynamic midfielder — he arrives late into the box, carries the ball out of tight spaces, and presses aggressively when possession turns over. Ounahi, operating as Morocco’s central attacking midfielder, will be tasked with disrupting the Netherlands’ build-up and finding passes in behind their midfield line. Both are high-energy, high-press players. Whoever controls this battle largely controls the match’s rhythm. If Reijnders has time on the ball, De Jong and Gravenberch have passing options; if Ounahi presses effectively and forces errors in central areas, Morocco’s counter-attacks start from dangerous positions.
Ismael Saibari vs Jan Paul van Hecke / Virgil van Dijk — Morocco’s three group stage goals came from Saibari’s movement and finishing in windows that looked closed. Van Dijk reads the game as well as any defender in world football; his positioning and early intervention have been excellent throughout the tournament. But Van Hecke alongside him is less battle-tested at this level. Saibari’s ability to spin in behind, drop short to receive, and then immediately turn is what makes him difficult — he doesn’t give defenders a fixed reference point. If he can isolate Van Hecke in a one-on-one, the danger is real.
Brahim Díaz vs Micky van de Ven / Nathan Aké — Morocco’s right attacking midfielder is technically their most refined player in tight spaces. Díaz drifts in and out of the lines, combines quickly, and drives at the left back in direct situations. Van de Ven is quick but can be caught when Díaz checks back and goes again in the same movement; Aké is more physical and less likely to be beaten for pace but gives Díaz more room to play in front of him. This channel — Díaz into the left back — is where Morocco can create in open play when the central lanes are blocked.
Tactical Breakdown
Netherlands’ 4-3-3 is built for possession and vertical progression. Gravenberch, as the anchor, gives De Jong and Reijnders license to push into more advanced areas, and when those two move forward together, they create numerical overload between Morocco’s double pivot and their back four. Morocco will look to stay in their 4-2-3-1 defensive mid-block — compact, disciplined, both pivot players tight to the centre — and force Netherlands wide before recovering the second ball.
The problem for Morocco’s block is Netherlands’ width. With Dumfries bombing from right back and Gakpo or Van de Ven adding width on the left, the Dutch can stretch Morocco’s defensive four horizontally and then find Reijnders or Malen arriving centrally. Morocco’s response will be to press Netherlands’ centre-backs early in possession to prevent those passes reaching the midfield. Bouaddi and El Aynaoui stepping to the ball — with Ounahi and Díaz pressing the De Jong line — is the key trigger for pressing.
The Decisive Factor
Whether the Netherlands can exploit Hakimi’s advanced positioning early in the match. If Gakpo gets in behind Hakimi in the first 25 minutes and forces Morocco to defend deep, their attacking outlets dry up, and the game becomes about the Netherlands’ possession quality versus Morocco’s defensive organisation.
