Argentina 3–2 Egypt
Egypt led twice. They led 1–0 at half-time after Yasser Ibrahim’s header, and 2–0 after Mostafa Ziko’s clinical finish in the 67th minute. Argentina’s Messi had missed a penalty in the 21st minute. For most of the second half, the defending champions looked like they were going out.
Then, in the space of thirteen minutes, it changed entirely. Cristian Romero headed in from a set-piece in the 79th minute. Messi — the same man who had missed the penalty — found the ball inside the box in the 84th minute and drove it past Shobeir. And in the 90+2nd minute, Enzo Fernández met a Lautaro Martínez cross with a directed header to complete the comeback. 3–2. Argentina through.
Egypt were outstanding for long stretches. Shobeir’s penalty save from Messi in the first half, the VAR-disallowed goal, the quality of their counter-attacking play — they deserved more than this.
Switzerland 0–0 Colombia (Switzerland Win 4–3 on Penalties)
This one needed 120 minutes and five rounds of penalties to separate the sides. Gregor Kobel saved a Puerta shot in the 21st minute, and Camilo Vargas kept out Rieder and Ndoye at the other end. Lucumí hit the crossbar in extra time. Campaz blazed over a one-on-one in the 115th minute. Every chance was spurned. Every save was made.
In the shootout, Davinson Sánchez hit the crossbar, Akanji blasted over, and Kobel saved Cucho Hernández’s penalty at the decisive moment. Rubén Vargas scored the winner. Switzerland through. Colombia’s tournament is over.
