Norway 2–1 Brazil | New Jersey Stadium
Nobody saw this coming. Norway eliminated five-time world champions Brazil in the Round of 16, with Erling Haaland delivering a match-winning brace in the final fifteen minutes to seal a historic victory.
The first half was defined by what didn’t happen. Norway had a goal ruled out by VAR in the 3rd minute — Alexander Sørloth offside on the cross. Brazil were awarded a penalty, but Carlo Ancelotti’s surprise choice to give the spot-kick to Bruno Guimarães over Vinícius Júnior backfired badly, with Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland saving low to his left. It was Brazil’s first missed World Cup penalty in 40 years.
After a goalless first half of missed chances and outstanding goalkeeping from both ends, Haaland ended the contest in two clinical strikes. A bullet header from an Andreas Schjelderup cross in the 79th minute gave Norway the lead. Ten minutes later, Schjelderup again — this time Haaland took one touch and drilled the ball into the bottom corner. 2–0.
A Neymar penalty in the 90+10th minute was all Brazil could manage. Norway are through to their first-ever FIFA World Cup quarter-final. They will face England.
Mexico 2–3 England | Estadio Azteca
England beat co-hosts Mexico 3–2 at the Estadio Azteca in a rollercoaster that involved a Jude Bellingham brace, a Harry Kane penalty, a straight red card for England, and an agonising final half hour spent defending with ten men against a side pushing everything forward. Mexico became the second co-host nation eliminated from the tournament after Canada.
Bellingham scored twice inside the first half — a far-post header from Saka’s cross in the 36th minute, then a swept finish set up by Kane two minutes later. Julián Quiñones pulled one back before half-time with a volley after Ezri Konsa failed to clear an Alvarado free-kick.
The second half belonged to drama. Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute for a dangerous tackle on Jesús Gallardo. England, instantly down to ten men, scored anyway — Kane converting from the penalty after goalkeeper Raúl Rangel brought down Anthony Gordon. 3–1. Mexico hit back through a Raúl Jiménez penalty in the 69th minute, but England’s makeshift backline — marshalled by a superb Jordan Pickford — held through 22 Mexican shots and twelve corners to take the three-goal win.
England advance to face Norway in the quarter-final. A Haaland vs Bellingham showdown awaits.
Coming Up Next
The Round of 16 continues with two more matches tomorrow. The biggest of the night is the Iberian derby — Portugal faces Spain at the Dallas Stadium at 12:30 AM IST. Cristiano Ronaldo and a battle-hardened Portugal squad take on a dominant Spain side that swept Austria 3–0 in the Round of 32. It is only the third time the two neighbours have met at a FIFA World Cup. Watch for Ronaldo’s big-match instinct against Spain’s suffocating midfield control.
Later in the day, USA will play against Belgium at the Seattle Stadium at 5:30 AM IST. FIFA has suspended Folarin Balogun’s one-game red card ban, making him fully eligible to play against Belgium. Both sides will be eyeing a place in the final eight.
